Carry On Alex’s Legacy: Support Future Doctors
Donation protected
My name is Jesús Reyes, and I’m starting this GoFundMe to honor my older brother, Alex Rodriguez-Prieto, who tragically passed away while he was a medical student at the University of Colorado.
Alex was the first in our family to go to college. A native of Mexico and a certified paramedic, he didn’t get into med school the first time he applied—but he didn’t give up. He completed a post-baccalaureate program, reapplied, and was accepted into CU’s School of Medicine, where he quickly became a mentor and inspiration to others. His dream was simple but powerful: to become a compassionate physician and help others do the same.
After his passing, the university created a scholarship in his name—the Alex Rodriguez-Prieto Memorial Award—given to a student who lifts up their classmates and embodies the kind of selflessness and resilience Alex lived every day. The award reads, “Though Alex is no longer with us physically, his spirit and memory encourage us each day to strive to be kind and compassionate physicians. The character and friendship he demonstrated set an example for us all, and there is no other student more deserving of this award.”
I’m launching this campaign to raise funds for that award. Not just because it helps future doctors from underrepresented communities—but because I’ve finally found the strength to share his story.
From 2013-2020, I couldn’t talk about Alex. Every time someone mentioned him, I’d change the subject. It hurt too much. I never truly processed his death. But this year, on National Sibling Day, I want to break that silence.
This GoFundMe is part of my healing. It’s a way to turn pain into purpose—and ensure that his legacy lives on through the people he would’ve been so proud to support.
If you’re able to donate, thank you. Every contribution brings us closer to giving more students like Alex the chance to fulfill their dreams. At the end of the fundraiser, all funds will be donated to the Rodriguez-Prieto Annual Award fund at CU so that it can continue awarding student scholarships.
And if all you can do is share this story—thank you for helping keep his memory alive.
