burial fund for veteran Art Lein

I humbly find myself in need of a little help to carry out my father’s final wishes.  My dad, Art Lein, is now on hospice care in Whitewater, WI.  He was born in 1927 in Whitewater and enlisted in the Army in 1945. He trained at Camp Hale in Colorado as a member of the 10th Mountain Division.  The Division was on its way to Seattle to ship out for the land invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped on Japan.  He thus never served overseas, and has difficulty accepting that he's deserving of military honors because he never actually fought in combat. He even refused to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. years ago when I tried to get him onboard with that, saying others were more deserving than he. His humility has led to some of the difficulty I now face.

Dad grew up in Whitewater, WI, and lived on the same street his whole life, prior to going into Fairhaven, a nursing home in town here. He owned a clothing store, Art Lein’s Menswear, for many years and served on many city and county boards. He is currently on hospice care and has a very short time to live. He was(this legion has dissolved) a member of VFW Post 5470, serving as Vice Commander for a number of years, and of American Legion Post 173.  He is worthy of military honors and burial and I am working to make that happen.

My parents had a funeral plan worked out.  When they went into Fairhaven, the nursing home and State took what monies they had left, as is standard. Their plan was to contribute to medical science, and they had arranged for their bodies to be donated to UW-Madison’s Medical School.  The school returns the cremated remains 6-12 months later.

My mother Mary Lou passed away two months ago, on August 2nd.  UW-M accepted her body, where she is helping a medical student learn human anatomy.

UW-M has now informed me that they are unable to accept my father’s body upon his death, as he tested positive for COVID-19 a few weeks ago.

Dad has been placed on hospice care. He is lucid and his long-term memory is still with him, but he is very weak and he is ready to join Mom in heaven.

I have begun working with the Veterans Administration to have my parents remains buried in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery (SWVMC), located near Union Grove, WI.  The VA provides the plot and marker, but does not pay for cremation or many  other expenses.

I am the sole survivor of my family, and am short of the funds need for cremation and small funeral expenses, so I am turning to this Gofundme campaign, humbly asking for help.  (I am keeping news of this away from my father, so he does not worry in his few remaining days.)  Any small help you can give a Veteran and member of the Greatest Generation would be very much appreciated.

My father will have an Honor Guard at his burial, an honor he so richly deserves.
