Brooklyn Center Mutual Aid - support our community

Donation protected

The Brooklyn Center community is in urgent need of support. We need your help to establish a Mutual Aid community for the hundreds of families directly impacted from police aggression and to support those on the frontlines fighting for justice for Daunte Wright.

We are partnering with social workers from the various schools that service Brooklyn Center residents, including some of the very schools we attended for our K-12 education. We are building a mutual aid project that is led by youth and guided by people who have a demonstrated commitment to the wellbeing of families in the area.

Our goal is to reimagine community care, centering and uplifting the voices of the youth, and prioritizing trusting relationships with the families in our community. To that end this fund will be run by the community to give them autonomy to define for themselves what their needs are. These resources will be distributed by people with deep roots and knowledge of this community to provide prompt and sustaining relief to those who need it.

Our mission is to build the infrastructure for something that will sustain our community longer term— after the press leaves. Join us in any way you can.

The Brooklyn Center community is in urgent need of support. Following the brutal murder of Daunte Wright by Brooklyn Center Police, our neighbors are in critical need of supplies and care from our broader community.

Daunte is not the first unarmed Black man to be killed by the state in Brooklyn Center. Brooklyn Center is a tiny suburb that has been over-policed for a long time – and now, our community is being saturated with military-style police and National Guard. We know they are getting ready for another, more aggressive night than last night.

The police are using tactics we've never seen from MPD, and what's clear is that they are trying to squash our protests and weaponize the concept of peaceful protest. We are seeing snipers with rubber bullets and all sorts of police on the roofs of private residences. This is not normal.

Unlike other places, Brooklyn Center is a  POC working class suburb – we have a Black mayor, and a Black city manager. Yet, the police department is overwhelmingly white and does not live in the area. The entire police precinct is surrounded by apartment buildings that are filled with Black and Brown families.

This is a Black, Asian, and Brown neighborhood. That is why we love this place, and why we love living here.

We are linked up with neighbors and organizers who are coming through to express their righteous rage and support each other since last night and early this morning.

We are committed to the health & safety of the people who live and surround the areas. We have a supply list for tonight that is focused on people's health and safety – not just with COVID, but from state sanctioned violence.

We are focused on being available for everybody, in particular people living directly in the area of protests. Our community is traumatized and we haven't even had the time to process what happened less than one year ago, but we are here and we're throwing down.

We appreciate the love, and it means a lot to know people are paying attention to what's happening in our home.
