Help an abandoned puppy from Cyprus
Donation protected
Hi my name is Sarah, I have been travelling to North Cyprus regularly since 2004. I have always been aware of the large numbers of stray cats and dogs on the island. I volunteer to walk dogs at KAR as often as I can, and several years ago we brought a stray cat to the UK after she adopted us during a visit.
It wasn't until October 2024, when I found 4 abandoned puppies in the mountains, that I realised quite how bad the situation was.
The puppies I found were in a remote area of the Besparmak Mounain range, where I had gone for a drive to enjoy the views while my son was napping in the car. I took them to the local vet who told me that they were pointer x labrador puppies and about 2 months old. They were all girls, and likely discarded by locals who keep pointer dogs for hunting but dont get them neutered.
My original intention had been to get them vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms then take them to a shelter. However I quickly learned that all of the shelters are not just full- they are overrun!
I was asked by the lady who runs the local shelter if I could take them to the UK where I would be more likely to find them good homes, however the cost to do this is over £3000 per puppy as we holiday in the North (Turkish) side of Cyprus which isn't in Europe.
I set this gofundme up to raise money to bring the puppies to the UK and we managed to raise a significant amount. With the help of some other people I was able to find the pups a cheaper foster home and reduce the costs, the vets were also great in speeding things up for us so that we could save on accommodation costs, they also reduced the price of treatments and vaccinations where they could.
With the help of many others I managed to bring the puppies back to the UK in December 2024.
I have committed to keeping one puppy (Lil) and the other 3 have found wonderful loving forever homes in the UK- 1 in Cornwall, 1 in Hampshire, and 1 with some friends of ours here in Staffordshire.
You can follow the pups story on my Cyprus instagram page @sarahscyprusadventures
However after speaking with the many animal charities and shelters in North Cyprus I have decided to continue fundraising to try and help home more stray animals in Cyprus, along with neutering strays where we can to help prevent the problem in the first place.
Any money donated here will go toward looking after animals in Cyprus and bringing them to the UK where I will find them the best homes possible.
ANything you can donate no matter how small, can be used, and if you would like to offer a forever home to one of the rescued animals do get in touch on the instagram page.
