Because Every Student of Color Deserves a Teacher of Color.
For the last decade, the Oregon Writing Project has hosted summer writing workshops for students — a creative writing workshop for 6-9th graders and a college essay writing class for juniors and seniors.
This summer we hope to offer workshops in creative writing and college essay writing for cohorts of students of color. Too often schools ask students of color to stifle themselves, to shrink, to conform, to camouflage their true selves. OWP coaches of color plan to create spaces where students of color can write openly and honestly with cohorts who understand the pressures of living and learning in white spaces. OWP seeks to raise $5,000 for 50 scholarships so that students of color can attend writing workshops in Beaverton, North and Southeast Portland, Tigard, and East County taught by teachers of color. Teachers of color who have completed the Oregon Writing Project certification program will teach all workshops.
Writing Your Way—Grades 6-9
In this week-long class, students of color will turn their notebooks to a new page. They will locate the stories they carry, take risks in writing, learn to turn memory into fiction, and fiction into poetry. They will write to a wide variety of prompts while honing skills through craft lessons that build both language dexterity and knowledge of genres. Though narrative can often be used as introductions to expository writing, these workshops will emphasize creative writing skills rather than persuasive or informative pieces.
Writing the College/Scholarship Essay
This week-long class is for students of color applying for college or a scholarship in the fall. Students will develop the skills they need to write a college essay that stands out from the crowd. At the end of the week, students will have revised drafts of two college essays.
Please donate now to help us raise scholarship funds so that 50 students of color in the Portland area will have an opportunity to work with an Oregon Writing Project teacher of color this summer.
