Soy Hugo Martínez-Tormo, artista visual y multimedia, afectado por las recientes inundaciones en Valencia, España. Hace ya muchos años que establecí mi residencia y lugar de trabajo en el pueblo de Paiporta (Valencia), el cual se ha visto gravemente afectado por las recientes inundaciones provocadas por la DANA, destrozando todo a su paso.

La tarde del martes 29 de Octubre, día de la catástrofe, me encontraba en mi casa, una casa de pueblo en planta baja a escasos 100 metros del barranco del Poio, el cual se desbordó con gran violencia y rapidez destrozando todo a su paso. A las 20:00h, un coche que flotaba por el río en que se había convertido mi calle y el cual ya llevaba casi un caudal de 2 metros de altura, chocó violentamente contra mi puerta y la rebentó, entrando toda el agua en tromba, como un tsunami, dentro de la casa. Conseguí salvar la vida in extremis subiéndome a un altillo en el trastero que tengo en mi casa y pasar ahí la primera noche sin saber muy bien el alcance de lo ocurrido y las consecuencias que esto traería. La casa quedó completamente destrozada en cuention de segundos, no pudiéndose salvar nada y el agua alcanzó una altura de 1,80 metros.

Al día siguiente me desplacé como pude a mí lugar de trabajo que está a tan solo 4 manzanas de distancia. Una planta baja de 120 metros cuadrados. Lo que allí me encontré también fue desolador. Allí el agua alcanzó una altura de 2,20 metros y no dejo nada en pie. Toda la obra que tenía realizada y almacenada desde los últimos 25 años quedó reducida a escombro, además de todas las herramientas y materiales de trabajo, dispositivos y material electrónico, documentos, proyectos futuros que estaban en marcha, etc. Además de la casa, el 100% del taller también despareció en cuestión de segundos.

Hoy os escribo a salvo desde una casa de Valencia capital en la que me estoy quedando a pasar las noches, para volver cada día a Paiporta y seguir con las labores de limpieza y desescombro con la ayuda y esfuerzo impresionante de miles de voluntarios que cada día llegan para seguir limpiando de barro, lodo y agua tanto las casas como las calles. Os escribo desde la incertidumbre de que pasará a corto y medio plazo, de cuando podremos retomar medianamente nuestra vida y normalidad y con todas las ganas y energía para rehacer cuanto antes tanto el taller como la casa y poder seguir contribuyendo con mi granito de arena al entramado cultural de nuestro país.

He estado recibiendo infinidad de mensajes de apoyo y preocupación por parte de todas las personas que me han acompañado a lo largo de mi vida y desde aquí les estoy eternamente agradecido. Agradezco muchísimo desde ya, todo el cariño y la ayuda. Un abrazo enorme para todos/as.

I am Hugo Martínez-Tormo, visual and multimedia artist, affected by the recent floods in Valencia, Spain. It has been many years since I established my residence and place of work in the town of Paiporta (Valencia), which has been severely affected by the recent floods caused by the DANA, destroying everything in its path.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 29, the day of the catastrophe, I was at home, a first floor townhouse just 100 meters from the Poio ravine, which overflowed violently and quickly destroying everything in its path. At 20:00h, a car floating down the river that had become my street and which already had a flow of almost 2 meters high, crashed violently against my door and burst it, all the water rushing like a tsunami into the house. I managed to save my life in extremis by climbing up to a loft in the storage room I have in my house and spend the first night there without knowing very well the extent of what happened and the consequences that this would bring. The house was completely destroyed in a matter of seconds, nothing could be saved and the water reached a height of 1.80 meters.

The next day I moved as best I could to my place of work, which is only 4 blocks away. A ground floor of 120 square meters. What I found there was also devastating. There, the water reached a height of 2.2 meters and left nothing standing. All the work I had done and stored for the last 25 years was reduced to rubble, as well as all the tools and work materials, electronic devices and equipment, documents, future projects that were in progress, etc. In addition to the house, 100% of the workshop also disappeared in a matter of seconds.

Today I am writing to you safely from a house in Valencia city where I am spending the nights, to return every day to Paiporta and continue with the cleaning and debris removal work with the help and impressive effort of thousands of volunteers who arrive every day to continue cleaning the houses and streets of mud, mud and water. I am writing to you from the uncertainty of what will happen in the short and medium term, of when we will be able to resume our life and normality and with all the desire and energy to rebuild as soon as possible both the workshop and the house and to be able to continue contributing with my grain of sand to the cultural fabric of our country.

I have been receiving countless messages of support and concern from all the people who have accompanied me throughout my life and from here I am eternally grateful. I am very grateful for all the affection and for all the love and help. A big hug to all of you.
