AWFY Club Read-A-Thon
Donazione protetta
Welcome to the ArtWorks for Youth Club Read-a-Thon Fundraiser page! Thank you in advance for your time and your support of this cause that is very important to us.
Over the past two weeks, over 60 students (in NYC and South Africa!) have been reading non-stop, raising money from pledges made by their sponsors. In addition to this fundraising element, the club organized connections between readers in New York and Jo Slovo by swapping bookmarks which included some fun facts about each other (see an example below).
Wait, what is ArtWorks for Youth?
ArtWorks for Youth is a nonprofit organization that provides after-school academic support and art instruction to students in the Joe Slovo Township, South Africa. The organization focuses on providing the enrichment students require but are not able to receive from under-resourced local schools.
What does this have to do with us here at The Packer Collegiate Institute?
Each spring break for the past 15 years, a group of Packer students has traveled to Joe Slovo to get to know students in the ArtWorks for Youth Program. This partnership has produced a profound connection, one that we—as Packer’s ArtWorks for Youth club—aim to maintain.
And what exactly is the AWFY Club?
Packer’s AWFY Club was founded in 2014 by students who had recently returned from the trip and wanted to continue to build upon their experience. The mission of the AWFY Club is to meaningfully engage with others while finding ways to enrich our communities with the resources we have available to us.
We also work to provide financial support to the ArtWorks Program through fundraising initiatives we do throughout the school year.
If you sponsored a reader, you should have received from them the information about how much they read and the amount of your corresponding donation. When donating, please include your reader’s name in the comment section. Thank you so much!
