Autism in Africa

Donazione protetta
Hi everyone!

This summer I will be traveling to Uganda to work at a school and an orphanage for children with developmental disabilities. In Uganda, children with special needs are called "kasiru," meaning stupid person. Their culture believes that children with Autism have been cursed. Because of this belief, families hide, lock away, or abandon their children. As a speech language pathologist, who loves working with children with Autism, this was incredibly disheartening to learn. In Uganda, 97% of children with disabilities do not receive an education because of their undeveloped special education system.

After being introduced to the founder of EmbraceKulture, Christa Preston, and learning about her incredible journey to build an education for children with developmental disabilities, I was profoundly inspired to become a part of this organization. Christa has spent the past four years working with the government and communities in Uganda in order to educate them on Autism and help provide these children with a proper education. Due to their limited resources, the school has minimal materials for these children. During my trip, I will be bringing over school supplies, games and different learning materials for the school and orphanage. Any donation is immensely appreciated!

Love, Danielle
