ARKIPIRATA
A Collective Boat and Land Based Community

The Vision:
We are an NGO and nonprofit community of sailors, artists, carpenters, circus performers, makers, musicians, volunteers and activists from around Europe and the world who have joined forces to create the project ‘ArkiPirata’, which aims to bring music, events, circus performance and art to harbours both remote and central, and use the attention to host workshops in recycled low-tech solutions for a more creative and eco-concious life. To inspire and teach the mindset and skills of upcycling and D.I.Y. culture and to facilitate social spaces and events for local activists, creative initiatives, curious individuals and anyone wanting to leave a positive footprint for a better world. Welcome aboard!

What We Are Doing:
The project started in November 2018 with the purchase of a 20 meter, 75-year-old fishing boat named Frydenstrand. This has become our biggest priority in terms of renovation and repairs and to find a suitable place to harbour. Frydenstrand, or the mothership as we like to call her, has become the central hub of our network and collective. We have a collective kitchen, social space and workshop of tools and materials on board. We have also recently purchased a truck to facilitate the collection and moving of materials and the expansion of our land based project. We have held workshops and events on upcycling, trash collection of the local harbour, circus performance and monthly events hosting open mics and bands. In addition to the mothership, we have a fleet of five boats undergoing renovation, that can sail to bring events, workshops and a DIY mentality from port to port. With no hierarchy, we make decisions consensus-based and everyone has equal input. We hope to teach both locals and travelers skills in sailing, woodwork, metalwork, circus performance, art, music, event hosting and a variety of other interests.

Why ArkiPirata:
With the looming threats of climate change, predicted rises in sea levels and the present rates of environmental destruction and species extinction, ArkiPirata presents an alternative collective model based on the upcycling of materials and the sharing of resources to support minimalist living and creative solutions. In addition to our educational workshops and events, we provide free space and accommodation to members for the creation and expansion of this growing network of alternative culture.

The Present Situation:
The mothership and base of our community is currently harboured in a shipyard in the small town of Svendborg, on the island Fyn in Denmark. With the increasing gentrification of harbour spaces it becomes increasingly challenging to secure a more permanent, longer term collective space and base for this community project. We are therefore seeking funding for the restoration of the mothership and to help start the purchase of land so that we can continue to host our workshops and events and provide a base for our fleet of boats. With our own land we will be able to secure the longer term future for the growth and expansion of this collective. Our dream is to create a base with a nomadic fleet of boats and vehicles capable of travelling the world. A secure base will allow us to safely store tools and materials, host local events and workshops and allow us to diversify into the fields of sustainable farming whilst providing a social space for the collective as a whole and the participation of the local community.
