Alissa’s Guillain-Barré Road to Recovery
Donazione protetta
In May, Alissa began experiencing a series of alarming and debilitating symptoms. Initially feeling extremely unwell, she was tested for Lyme disease and West Nile virus, among other conditions. Despite diligent hydration, she remained dehydrated and her potassium levels were low. Unable to work, she faced/faces financial uncertainty while grappling with exhaustion, body aches, and an inability to sleep.
As time went on, Alissa's symptoms worsened, with numbness in her mouth and tongue, a crushing sensation in her stomach, and extreme fatigue making daily activities nearly impossible. By June, Alissa's condition deteriorated further. She was admitted to the hospital, where an abdominal CT and brain MRI were conducted, revealing a fatty liver and a dense area on her gall bladder. Despite these findings, no clear diagnosis was made. Alissa's mobility was severely affected, causing her to fall multiple times. She continued to undergo extensive testing, including a lumbar puncture, spine MRI, chest X-ray, and breathing tests, with Lyme disease and neuropathy being considered. Throughout this ordeal, Alissa remained in severe pain and without definitive answers.
Alissa has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare and serious condition affecting the nervous system. This diagnosis comes with significant medical expenses, ongoing treatments, and the need for extended recovery. Alissa is unable to work during this time and is facing immense financial pressure.
Currently, her biggest struggles are with her legs, feet, and hand coordination, making it difficult to hold or feel anything.
Daily Battles: Alissa is enduring severe pain, emotional struggles, and the frustration of not being able to walk without assistance. She is also dealing with numbness, making it hard to eat or drink, and experiencing severe fatigue and discomfort.
Hospital Discharge: Alissa was discharged to Floyd Valley Rehab in LeMars for rehabilitation. She is now closer to home, which is a relief for her and her family. However, the journey ahead remains challenging, with the need for continuous physical therapy and support.
How You Can Help:
PRAY: Your prayers are invaluable. Pray for Alissa’s swift recovery, for her hand coordination to improve, and for her insurance to approve her rehab.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Alissa hasn’t been at her job long enough to qualify for FMLA/STD, leaving her without much financial assistance. Any contributions will help cover medical expenses, daily living costs, and support her daughter, Claire.
BREAKS FOR GRANDMA AND GRANDPA:
Volunteers to take care of Claire for a few hours would be greatly appreciated, allowing Alissa’s parents some respite and the ability to focus on their day-to-day responsibilities!
VISITS & ENCOURAGEMENT: Visits from friends and family can lift Alissa’s spirits. If you’re nearby, consider stopping by Floyd Valley Rehab to see her.
EMOTIONAL SUPPORT: Texts, calls, and messages of encouragement mean the world to Alissa and her family. Cards and gift cards have been a great source of support and are deeply appreciated.
Alissa’s journey is a difficult one, but with your support, we can help her overcome Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Thank you for your generosity, prayers, and for being part of Alissa’s support system. Together, we can make a difference in her recovery.
