Aid Shanaelle's Journey at Howard University

My name is Shanaelle Charleus, a proud first-generation Haitian-American college student from Fort Lauderdale by way of North Miami, Florida. I’m a junior at Howard University, majoring in International Business with a concentration in Marketing and double minoring in Philosophy and Sports Administration.

Never in my life did I imagine I’d have the opportunity to attend Howard, let alone leave my hometown to pursue my education out of state. But I took a leap of faith because I knew this was God’s plan. I knew that Howard was the place where I could truly grow, thrive, and become the woman I’m destined to be.

Since stepping foot on campus, I’ve worked tirelessly, academically, professionally, and within my community. I’ve proudly served in leadership roles. I’ve volunteered every year  with Accepted Students Day and Howard’s Alternative Spring Break, giving back to communities in need. 

Despite everything I’ve achieved, the reality is that financial hardship threatens to interrupt my education and many other students. Howard unexpectedly reduced financial aid this year with no clear explanation. I’ve applied to numerous scholarships, and I’m still awaiting decisions. However, Howard won't let us pay the balance with scholarships either . 

All of this comes while my family battles significant medical hardships this year. Being the oldest daughter in my family, I’ve always tried to carry the weight quietly and independently, but I’ve reached a point where I must humbly ask for help.

I currently owe $5,373 to Howard. Without paying this, I can’t register for classes, obtain housing, or continue my education this fall. I’ve come too far to give up. I refuse to believe that my story ends here.

Anything you can give, no matter how big or small, is a blessing. Your contribution will not be in vain. My mother instilled this quote in me, “Education is the key that can open any door” , and with your help, I pray that door remains open for me.
