I’m Trying to Recover After Ongoing Violence Took My Home, My Stability, and Nearly Everything I Own

 

My name is Klik. I’m a chill older guy who works in the cannabis industry. I’m a former artist and musician. I’ve lived in the same rent‑stabilized San Francisco flat for 33 and a half years. It’s the only home I’ve ever had here. It gave me stability and independence in a chaotic world.

 

I never imagined asking for help like this.

 

Over the past several months, a housemate became increasingly violent with the clear goal of taking over my rent‑controlled home. One by one, he chased every other roommate out, using threats, intimidation, and fear. He told people he would kill them. He made sure the rest of the household couldn’t safely stay.

 

This wasn’t a one‑time incident.  

The first two ribs were broken about a month before the final, much more vicious attack — an assault that likely would have ended my life if it had not been interrupted. The person who did this is experienced in causing harm while leaving minimal visible evidence. The pattern included coercion, gaslighting, DARVO behavior, sleep disruption, and financial abuse, all escalating over time.

 

During the final attack, I escaped with only what I had in my pockets. Even the pants I was wearing were torn.

 

Everything else was gone.

 

My belongings, my tools, my clothing, my creative equipment — all gone. The fully furnished five‑bedroom flat I lived in for more than three decades was stripped bare. Not even lightbulbs were left. As the master tenant, I’m responsible for the extensive damage.

 

Right now I have:

• 5 socks  

• 2 pairs of pants  

• 7 shirts or layers  

• No furniture  

• No tools or equipment  

• No savings left  

 

I’ve missed two full weeks of work because I can barely move without pain. Some of the injuries may be permanent. My savings have been wiped out. All my roommates are gone, leaving me responsible for the full rent. As a low‑income older renter, losing this rent‑stabilized home would leave me with no path to afford another place in San Francisco.

 

If I lose this home, I will become unhoused.

 

Before this started, my life worked.  

I walked everywhere — it kept me healthy mentally and physically. I lived modestly. I saved what I could. I stayed independent. I kept the flat functioning. I did everything right. But nobody can plan for something like this.
