Build Up, Not Out!
Phase 2: The Final Push to Give Adri a Home.
Over 20 years ago, Adrienne Galler Lastra—affectionately known as Adri—did something extraordinary.
She gave up her home so that countless abandoned and abused dogs in Loiza, Puerto Rico, could have one.
That house became Amigos De Los Animales, a non-profit dog sanctuary and safe haven for Puerto Rico’s forgotten strays. It’s where Adri has lived and worked for decades, devoting every ounce of her energy—and every dollar she could find—to the animals. To keep the lights on, she even pawned her mother’s cherished jewelry. To make ends meet, she taught English at night. She’s never asked for anything. Not for herself.
But now, it’s our turn to give back.
Adri, now older and living on a fixed income, still lives in the shelter—but in a cramped back room surrounded by barking dogs and concrete walls. She doesn’t want to leave the dogs. She just wants a little peace.
So we began “Building a Home for a Hero”—a second floor just for Adri, giving her the space and dignity she’s earned many times over. Thanks to dozens of kind souls, we’ve already raised over $30,000 and construction is underway.
That’s right—you made this dream real.
But we’re not done yet. We still need to raise $55,000 to finish the job: walls, a roof, plumbing, electricity, and the basics that turn a structure into a home.
Now, we’re turning to the next wave of heroes: YOU.
Whether you're giving $5 or $500, you are part of something bigger than a donation. You're part of a community building a safe space—not just for the dogs, but for the woman who has sacrificed everything for them.
Let’s finish what we started.
Let’s make sure that this time, Adri has a space that belongs to her.
Because the real heroes aren’t just the ones who rescue dogs... they’re the ones who step up to help the rescuers.
