A Heart of Gold: Help Chris Recover!

Many of you know Chris Stephenson as a professional drummer, drum teacher, author, friend, family member and sometimes, FedEx driver!

In early July, Chris received his second shot to be ready for ease of travel and access to venues during his tours. Unfortunately, he reacted and suffered severe inflammation of his heart (myocarditis) and was admitted to the Ottawa Heart Institute Intensive Care for a week to treat his symptoms.

Despite his excellent care, he developed severe complications in the month following his hospital stay. He was readmitted to the Heart Institute Cardiac Critical Care where he recently underwent an emergency placement of a permanent Pacemaker due to complete heart block (3rd degree) and progressive inflammation of his heart.

His road to recovery and rehabilitation will be very long. During the initial lockdown, Chris decided to pursue a childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot and began his studies through adult education. For now, his course load is on hold and he cannot work, but the most devastating news for him is that he will no longer be able to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot and cannot drum for an indeterminate time.

Chris’ passion is drumming. He is resilient, and with the needed support, he’ll be back one day. Chris and his family are very grateful to the staff at the Ottawa Heart Institute, who have been an amazing team.
