Please help Donate and Share this story to help newlyweds Valerie and Blair Sterrett! They were in a terrible car accident and are in between Health Insurance right now. The Medical bills are quickly piling up on them and any amount you can offer would really be appreciated!
On Nov. 30th 2014 at about 9:30 PM, Valerie and Blair were driving home on the I-80 east after the 167 mile mark near Winnemucca in Nevada (an isolated highway) from visiting Valerie’s Grandmother for Thanksgiving.
They were approaching a bridge and little did they know, 5 other cars had hit the black ice on the bridge, lost control and gone off the road earlier and the ambulance was already on it’s way.
Valerie was driving and had the car on cruise control going 80 mph when they hit the Black Ice. She lost control, took a nose dive just past the bridge, then flipped about 5 times, flying over the heads of people who had fallen before them, then catapulting over a fence where they landed upside down about 30 to 50 yards out!
Blair immediately attended to his wife, but she knew that they needed to get out. With blood drenched faces they both managed to crawl out the broken side windows. Valerie was stuck in the doorway, caught in a seatbelt. Blair pulled up the metal of the car door and called out for a knife. One of the other victims from the black ice earlier ran to the rescue to cut her belt.
A voice inside told Valerie to stay awake and keep breathing. It was getting harder and harder for her to breathe as she propped up her chest telling us that she didn't have much time and called out to God for help. They figured she had broken ribs that had punctured her lungs. Within minutes the ambulance came and police immediately shut down the I-80 where the ice was. Their car had been the last to go off and only car to flip and roll down the hill.
Valerie was placed painfully and securely on a stretcher and were then rushed to the local ER in Winnemucca.
Upon arrival they inserted a tube in her collapsed lung and gave her oxygen. Blair could hear her screaming from the next room where he had contacted two members of the LDS church to quickly arrive and help him give her a priesthood blessing. One of her lungs had popped and the other severely bruised and was collecting blood from the blunt force impact of the accident.
Due to Valerie's critical condition, she was quickly transferred to Renown Regional Medical Center, a hospital 2 hours away in Reno Nevada.
She spent the first day in the ICU and is currently healing in the hospital with the tube in her chest to collect excess air from her lung for about a week longer.
Her husband Blair has been by her side daily comforting her and healing as well from his injuries of whiplash and a few lacerations on his head.
It is a miracle that they are still alive and we want them to be able to recover without having to worry about this financial burden. Any amount will help and we appreciate all the support and prayers. Thank you very much!
Love,
Amber Monroy
(Valerie's sister)
