Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
On January 8, 2025, a devastating fire consumed my parents' and grandparents home, reducing it to ashes. We are eternally grateful that everyone escaped unharmed, but the loss is immeasurable. Everything my parents and grandparents built over decades — their cherished belongings, irreplaceable memories, and the very heart of our family — was destroyed.

The houses were more than home; they were places filled with rich history, love, and service to our community. It was where my mother hosted events for California senators, where my husband and I celebrated our wedding reception,
and where my late grandfather once stood watch as a lifeguard during gatherings held by the home’s previous owner — a former president of the NAACP Altadena chapter. My mother knew him personally from her own involvement with the organization, and my parents continued his legacy, opening their home as a space for friends, neighbors, and community groups like the Links to gather and create lasting memories.

For my family, Los Angeles has always been a sanctuary, a place of peace. We have called Altadena/Pasadena home for several generations. This tragedy marks the second fire to disrupt that peace in our family. In 2021, my great-grandmother’s house in Pasadena burned down, displacing my uncle and cousin.

Now, the Eaton fire has displaced my parents, sisters, uncle, and grandmother, leaving us heartbroken but hopeful.
I am reaching out with humility and hope, asking for your support as my parents navigate this painful road to recovery. Donations will be used for helping them get back on their feet. Three generations and two separate households were affected and have to start from the ground up.
This loss has shaken us deeply, but we are overwhelmed by the love and support of our community. Every donation — no matter how small — brings my parents, grandmother, uncle and two sisters closer to restoring the foundation of their lives. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this page would be an incredible gift of kindness.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for standing with us in this time of need.
Warmly and gratefully,
Courtney Calhoun (formerly Courtney Green, Hilarie and James' eldest daughter and Carol Dysons grand daughter)
