Stanford Venture Capital Program

Donation protected
I’ve been accepted into the Venture Capital Unlocked at Stanford University.  In this course I’ll work closely with the Stanford University faculty and 500 Startups leadership to hone my investment thesis and learn how to successfully engage the various stakeholders of the venture capital industry.

Why am I interested in the program?

In 2013, I co-founded Opportunity Hub (OHUB) serving as President. OHUB grew to a multi-campus entrepreneurial center in Atlanta, GA that offered coworking and office space, intense entrepreneurship, coding and investment training and programming, a pre-accelerator and incubator.

OHUB hosted more than 100 meetings and events annually. Over a four year period, roughly 100 companies have gone through OHUB’s Pre-Accelerator program. Most of those companies are minority-owned businesses, and all are technology-related startup companies. Roughly one-fifth of the companies who have completed the Pre-Accelerator have gone on to become viable companies.

OHUB merged with TechSquare Labs in October 2015 to launch a 25,000 s/f technology incubator, corporate innovation lab and seed fund in TechSquare near Georgia Institute of Technology. Tech Square Labs serves as the Google for Entrepreneurs campus for Atlanta.

While the overall entrepreneur ecosystem in Atlanta has experienced growth over the last few years, the funding landscape is still very nascent. As Chair of the Venture Capital Committee at Startup Atlanta, I conducted an audit of the Atlanta investor ecosystem, identifying all of the active angels, funds and family offices. We discovered a great need in early-stage funding, especially as it relates to underserved communities.

After being hyper-local focused over the last few years, I now collaborate with startup ecosystems around the world to scale individual and collective solutions to local and global challenges.

What do I hope to learn from Venture Capital Unlocked?

I am excited to participate in the Venture Capital Unlocked program. It will provide a facilitated roadmap and structure to accelerate my growth and access to the tools and relationships to amplify my impact.

As I work with active investors, I am learning more about the value of being a node in the global network. There has been great interest in deal flow and access to entrepreneurs in the Atlanta and beyond. I recognize the opportunity to serve as a bridge between institutional capital and entrepreneurs within my expanding global network. The Venture Capital Unlocked program will allow for me to participate in a more formal capacity, while increasing my ability to source, recognize, and execute deals.
