LA Marathon Benefiting Steps4Hope
Donation protected
Hello All!
For those of you who know me, know that I have never run a Marathon and would probably bet money that I never would. However, on February 14, 2016, I will be running in the Los Angeles Marathon along side Sarah Hospodar, Teddy Hospodar, Jen Sims, Kelsey Byrne, and Lexie Byrne, and I will be raising money for Steps4Hope.
At first I was running this Marathon becasue my girlfriends brother moved out to LA recently and some of his family decided to talk me into running it with them. I didnt believe I would be going through with it until the training started.
About a week into the training, I was scheduled to run in the 2nd Annual Steps4Hope 5k. Steps4Hope is a nonprofit foundation that was founded in early 2014 after a close friend of mine, Jon Moules, tragically passed away when he lost his battle to substance abuse. Jon came from a loving and supportive family and was an outgoing, personable, and loving friend, son, and brother. I had the honor of spending a few of my years at Penn State with him, as well as the honor of living with his twin brother Mike for the remainder of my years there, and getting to know their family. Steps4Hope is committed to raising awareness of substance absuse and working towards eliminating the stigma associated with the disease of addiction.
Until this point in time (standing there after the 5k was over), I had no real purpose to run the upcoming marathon besides to just do it. It was at the run, after hearing Mr. Moules speak about Jon's story and stories alike that I started thinking I should have a purpose to run this marathon, and somebody to run it for besides myself (and those running it along side of me). Thats when it hit me, what better cause then the one I was running the 5k for?
The disease of addiction is something that has impacted my life greatly from the time I was a child. From growing up seeing my cousin go through the struggle, and seeing the stigma built around it, to seeing somebody that I considered my brother battle addiction day in and day out until almost everybody around him give up on him. I have watched families shattered because of the disease and I have watched families rebuild stronger than ever after a tragic loss. I have seen the disease win and take innocent lives, and I have seen young adults take the disease by the horns and come out on top working towards a lifetime of sobriety.
So this marathon is for them. All those individuals that have been and will be effected by the disease of addiction, all the families that it has impacted, all those who are looked at differently due the stigma around addiction, and all of those who need help and support when they feel like there is no more help and support left. Those who have lost their battle, those who have won their battle, and those whos battle is not yet over
