Emergency surgery for Winston

Donation protected
Winston is in need of emergency surgery, and we’re asking for your help so he can get the procedure he needs. If you know Jeremy, you know Winston is his best friend; he’d do anything for his dog. He already has! I’ll tell you about that in a moment. In total, Winston  needs $3,730 for his surgery and care. Will you help us get Winston surgery that will give him up to six more years of good life?

Let me tell you a bit about Winston. He had a tragic start to life. When he was only a puppy, he was abused and abandoned.

Winston was purchased by a couple from a breeder when he was a puppy. Back then, the breeder remembers he was excitable and sweet. His temperament was perfect for a family. But a few months later, the couple suddenly returned him. The breeder was shocked. How had such a well-mannered puppy become so fearful and reactive towards people?

Often, when balanced puppies abruptly become extremely afraid of people, it’s because they were abused. His drastic change in behaviour strongly indicates this couple abused him.

Trainers told the breeder to put Winston down. Who would want to care for him? Jeremy. That’s who. Let’s make sure Winston can enjoy a healthy life with Jeremy, whom he loves and trusts, for years to come.

In a last resort to save him, someone reached out to Jeremy. They knew Jeremy had another Boston named Baxter. Like Winston, Baxter had been given a death sentence (his owners thought no one would be willing to pay for ongoing medication for a chronic, but treatable condition). Thanks to Jeremy, Baxter was loved, always had his meds, and lived a happy life.

Seeing another little puppy that no one wanted, Jeremy couldn’t say no. He welcomed Winston into his life.

Jeremy wouldn’t trade Winston for the world. He’s his best friend. If you have the means to help, we’d be so grateful for anything you can spare.

If you’re a dog lover, you know. Even if your dog has some behavioural issues, you work with them, adapt to their needs, and love them anyway.

Caring for Winston, at times, can be challenging. He continues to be incredibly fearful around strangers.

Because of Winston’s trauma, it’s been impossible for vets to examine him. Once, we tried to get Winston in for a dental cleaning. Four vet technicians held Winston down (keep in mind he’s a small dog), and that was only to administer the needle for anaesthesia. Sadly, after trying everything, they were unable to clean his teeth—he fought through the anaesthesia and was stressed to the point of his tongue turning blue.

The vet feared his heart wouldn’t be able to take it and he would die on the table because of his stress.

As you can imagine, vet appointments continue to be a struggle.

Now that I’ve shared his backstory, here’s where Winston is at today. Back in June, Winston had a potential seizure or stroke and collapsed while we were outside. He was choking for air every few minutes. We were so scared for him. We rushed him into the vet’s office, and for the first time ever, a vet was able to touch him and use a stethoscope on him. Tragically, his incoherent state is the only reason that was even possible.

The vet discovered that Winston had a severe heart murmur and lungs filled with fluid.

Winston was given heart medication and diuretics to try and clear the fluid. Today, we check his heart rate 3x/day and watch for signs of heart failure. Currently, Winston takes 3 pills/day for the past five months, and it seems to be working. Winston is feeling much better!

These daily medications aren’t cheap, costing $300/month. For your best friend, what is $300/month, if you can afford it? (Not everyone can). We’ve had to make changes to our lifestyle to accommodate this, but we’ve done so gladly.

Just when we thought Winston was on the mend, we noticed he had a loose tooth. Today the vet told us that Winston’s teeth are severely damaged; he urgently needs most of them pulled. With proper medical care and teeth removal, the vet believes Winston can enjoy six healthy and happy years with us, his pack.

Our vet has a plan to manage Winston’s anxiety so his tooth extractions are possible. Because of his bad heart, he needs cardiology tests before the procedure, too. Unfortunately, the total cost for this emergency veterinary care is $3,730, well beyond our means.

We’ve set up an emergency GoFundMe account to help cover the costs of Winston’s surgery. If you can give to help, your generosity will mean so much to all of us. Winston is Jeremy’s best friend and we’d be so lost without him, especially knowing he could still have many years of good life ahead of him.

Please share our story so we can give Winston the happy and healthy life he deserves! If you can help by giving, we so appreciate that. If you can’t give, would you share Winston’s story on your socials? We will not forget the love and help you share for Winston!
