Our cooperative forest school is growing and we need your help!
In the fall of 2018, we started an outdoor, nature-based homeschool cooperative on 20 acres just outside of Fayetteville, AR. We completed our first year and we’re adding new families as we go into our second year this fall. This has been an amazing process. The adults have grown as much as our children. We have created a truly cooperative school, learned Nonviolent Communication, and our kids are thriving as they learn from us and each other in a multi-age outdoor classroom.
We spend 99% of our time in the elements, either in the forest, fields or bluffs. On 20-degree days, we bundle up and hike or start a fire in the shelter of a bluff. On hot days, we spend time in the shade and learn about water. During inclement weather, we use our 16 foot round canvas tent.
We love our time outdoors, but we also need an indoor space to keep this school sustainable and to store our school materials. We are going to build a 16x16 foot schoolhouse with lots of natural light, efficient heat, and tons of shelves and art spaces.
Alex (co-op mom and builder) has salvaged and collected many of the materials we need. We have tin for the roof, 2x4s for the walls, floor joists, insulation, and even sheetrock. We need to buy well-insulated, quality windows to bring the outdoors in, an energy-efficient heater, electrical and plumbing supplies, and a few other school materials.
