Jason Burkart is a 39 year old father of three, two girls & a boy. His girlfriend, Victoria, and him are expecting a child January 23rd, 2016. Jason works two jobs to take care of his family. He is a loving father, caring friend, and a hard worker.
On June 12th, 2015 Jason was heading to work, hoping to get done early because it was his daughters 5th birthday, when he was struck on his motorcycle by a truck. Jason, on his motorcycle, and the truck were traveling on the same road heading in opposite directions when the truck turned left into Jason. He was flown to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. Jason suffered: two broken vertebrae, his elbow was broken, his left foot was partially detached, his left knee was shattered, his left leg had multiple breaks in his femur & tibia.
While in Temple, for a month, Jason underwent 9 operations. The doctors were unable to fully repair his back because of a blood clot that traveled to his heart, which can not be surgically removed. Instead they did a temporary fix to help stabilize his back. Using plates, rods, & screws the doctors were able to repair his elbow, leg, & knee to the best of their ability; though Jason has limited movement in both. Unfortunately they were unable to save his left foot & ended up having to amputate part of his left leg along with his left foot. Once Jason left Temple he went to Moss Rehabilitation Center to learn how to get around using only the right side of his body.
At the time of the accident, Jason, like many others in this country, did not have health insurance. The truck that hit him was owned by a township, which had "no fault insurance". The townships policy has a small lump sum that they will pay out but it is no where near the amount needed for the medical bills alone.
Jason is not capable of working, as he works as a sub contractor. Which is leaving Victoria to support all of them and trying to pay something towards the many medical bills coming in.
Jason is in good spirits all things considered. He is trying his hardest to come home to his family, and be the active father he's always been, but they all have a very long and hard road ahead.
