My friend Vicki is the most amazing and devoted mom of Katlyn. Katlyn's 15 now and suffers from Fumarase Deficiency - a very rare condition that primarily affects the nervous system, especially the brain.
This has left her unable to speak, to control her most of her body, to eat as most of us do. But she smiles!! Boy does she smile! And she is totally enamored with mylar baloons. She has an incredible way of lifting my spirits, of brightening my day.
Since meeting Vicki and Katlyn a few years ago, I have seen "Miss K" go in and out of the hospital many many times. Far more than any young person should have to. She has seizures, she has digestive issues, she is often in pain. I say Vicki is the most devoted mom, because she is with Katlyn 24/7 and NEVER have I heard her complain about how much work it is, or how depressed she is, or anything. In fact, she's just the opposite - giving her help and supoort to others in need.
But now she needs us. Katlyn has gone back into the hospital - to one of Boston's best. The doctor says she'll be there "for a long time". Vicki won't leave her daughter's side - she has to be her advocate since Katlyn 's diagosis is so complex.
Vicki doesn't ask for much. Once in a while she'll ask me to watch "Miss K" while she runs for a prescription or some other urgent need. But she's asking now. With Katlyn in the hospital, Vicki doesn't get paid for being Katlyn's personal care asistant. And that's how Vicki pays her bills. She's not asking for much - she hopes for help with rent, with electricity, with the phone bill... Those things that most of us take for granted.
So will you help? Will you consider donating? Even the smallest amount can make a big difference. And if you're not able to support Vicki and Katlyn financially, would you consider sending your prayers, your healing energy? Would you send a cheerful note or card?
I know Vicki would be supremely thankful for any gesture. And I will be too. Knowing I can help ease a wee bit of her stress helps me feel less helpless!
Thank you in advance!!
Lee
