Greetings all,
My name is Coral Natalie Negrón Almodóvar, I'm from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and I'm 24 years old. I completed my Bachelors Degree (Magna Cum Laude)
in the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. My majors were Political Science and Foreign Languages. I did two minors: Gender Politics and International Relations. Studied Italian and Portuguese for 3 years. Researched women representation in the media; human trafficking; water issues in Central Asia; political status of Puerto Rico and Middle East politics.
A few days ago I learned that I was accepted into the Digital Methods Summer School in the University of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. I am more than excited about this opportunity and for reaching my dream of being well capable in native research methods of the digital era.
At the moment, I have applied for a scholarship that the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, offers for research travel but I do not know if I will receive it or how much would I receive.
The program has a cost of 795 euros plus airfare. Fortunately, I have already found where to stay thanks to the Couchsurfing innitiative (Hooray for this!), but I will undoubtedly need more funds to cover any expenses.
As you all know, I am a devoted mother and am also very devoted to my work. However, my current salary goes towards essential spending in my household. That is why I ask for any contributions that you can make. I am a full time student in the last stage of completing my Master’s Degree. This experience will help me tune up the methodology of my thesis and at the same time, will allow me to bring the knowledge I gain during this journey back with me to share with the University of Puerto Rico and other nonprofit organizations that I wish to cooperate with.
The University of Amsterdam is a pioneer in developing research methods and only by participating in these programs will that knowledge be spread. For my part, I promise to pass on my knowledge to anyone that is interested in learning.
I am racing agains the clock here. This journey will take place on June 24 and it very well could represent a new future for me and I have faith that it will also contribute with the education of the general population of Puerto Rico.
My thesis deals with the discussion about the Fiscal Control Board on social media. As Egin Esin and Evelyn Ruppert discuss in their text “Digital Citizens”: to understand the new emergence of “citizen subjects acting through the Internet as subjects of power, we have to investigate the conventions that call them forth as digital citizens and the digital acts they perform to say and do things”. We cannot keep overlooking Puerto Ricans online statements about the negative repercussions of the fiscal crisis in the services provided both by the private and government sectors. Puerto Ricans in and outside the island are discussing their feelings and ideas in social media and this is vital information to comprehend identity transformations.
No one knows where we will end up these days, but we DO KNOW that we are anxious for change, fight, and work. I am up for the challenge and will give my all to complete these program and spread my gained knowledge.

Hace unos días me enteré que fui aceptada en la escuela de verano Digital Methods con sede en la Universidad de Ámsterdam. Estoy más que emocionada por la oportunidad y por cumplir mi sueño de capacitarme en métodos de investigación nativos de la era digital. Al momento, solicité la beca de viajes de investigación que otorga la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras, pero aún no sé si la recibiré ni la cantidad de dinero que me sea otorgada.
El programa tiene un costo de 795 euros más pasaje. Afortunadamente, ya conseguí donde quedarme gracias a la iniciativa Couchsurfing (¡bravo por la misma!), pero de todos modos necesitaré dinero para subsistir. Como saben soy mamá y trabajo con entrega. No obstante, mi sueldo se va en gastos esenciales de subsistencia. Por eso, pido su contribución.
Soy estudiante de maestría a tiempo completo y estoy en la etapa final. Esta experiencia me ayudará a afinar la metodología de mi tesis y al mismo tiempo permitirá que pueda traer mis conocimientos a la Universidad de Puerto Rico y a otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro con las que deseo cooperar. La Universidad de Ámsterdam es pionera en desarrollar estos métodos de investigación y solo mediante la participación de estos programas será posible que se esparza el conocimiento. Yo, por mi parte, prometo instruir a todo el que esté interesado en aprender lo que yo aprenda.
El viaje sería el 24 de junio. Estoy en contra del tiempo, por ende, les suplico que rieguen la voz. Este viaje significa un nuevo futuro para mí y tengo fe de que también contribuya a la educación de los isleños en general.
Mi tesis trabaja la discusión sobre la Junta de Control Fiscal Federal en las redes sociales. Como Engin Isin y Evelyn Ruppert explican en su texto "Beign digital citizens": para entender la nueva aparición del "ciudadano sujeto actuando a través del Internet como sujeto de poder, hay que investigar sus actos digitales...". No podemos continuar ignorando las discusiones en línea sobre las repercusiones de la crisis fiscal en los servicios privados y gubernamentales. Los puertorriqueños en y fuera de la Isla están discutiendo sus sentimientos e ideas en las redes sociales y esto es información vital para comprender las transformaciones vigentes de identidad.
Nadie sabe dónde terminaremos en estos días, pero sí estamos ansiosos de cambio, de lucha y de trabajo. Yo estoy dispuesta a ello y daré el máximo para finalizar el programa y enseñar lo aprendido.
