Brooklyn’s Kidney Transplant

Donation protected

My name is Lisa and I am a single mother of 4 beautiful children. Basil, Brooklyn, Boston & Braxtyn. We live in Tulsa, Oklahoma also known as the bible belt which is about 2 hours from the state capital.
My oldest daughter Brooklyn has been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease and she is in desperate need of a new kidney. I need your help with medical expenses and finding her a kidney.
Brooklyn has the biggest heart I have ever seen and she is only 15. Her heart, her smile and her soul are all magic. Not only is she made of magic and extremely smart, she is creative too. She draws the most captivating illustrations and it all started at a very young age.

Diagnosis

Brooklyn was a normal 11 year old little girl. She loved playing with her cousins and this particular summer she had been playing at her cousins house and came home complaining that her bones were hurting. We gave her Tylenol and within 24 hours she had broken into hives on her back and thighs. I thought it may have been a dog that she was playing with. So we took her to see a pediatric Dr. which diagnosed her with rare disease that can be passed from dogs. The doctor prescribed her some meds for the pain in her joints. She however could not explain the hives. So she recommended that we go to an allergy specialist which found that she was only allergic to dust mites.
"Ok, now what?" I kept thinking.. I was still so confused and I wanted to get a second opinion so we took her to see Dr. Zomer. He took some time to get to know our family history and he ordered blood work, urine samples and did an XRAY on her. After the urine sample & blood work he immediately said that he was referring us to the only pediatric Rheumatologist in Oklahoma, Dr. Travis.
Of course his calendar was booked so we waited until an opening came up.

Meanwhile her condition was not easing up. I had been applying steroid creams to help with the itching and she was still in so much pain. Her little face was swollen and the bottom of her feet had red hives all over them. She was constantly crying because it hurt for her to walk. I was extremely worried because she had lost so much weight. We urgently called Dr. Travis  and after a quick exam and reading her labs he was immediately able to diagnose her with an auto immune disease called Lupus Nephritis. We were in so much shock to learn about this awful disease. She was in the hospital for about a month gaining her strength to walk again, learning how to swallow her pills and monitoring her creatinine levels .  I took time from work and cared for her. I was able to research as much as I could on the disease and was astonished by how many people are affected by this disease.

Fast Forward

February 2020 right before COVID hit hard. Brooklyn was having a nurse come to the home to perform her infusions. This particular day the nurse was checking her vital signs she noticed that her blood pressure was high and stated that we needed to check with the doctor. We drove to OKC and saw a new Dr. in training whom noted that her blood pressure was high and made sure Brooklyn was taking her meds. She sent us home. Once we got home She then started getting really severe headaches, her blood pressure spiked extremely high. We took her to the ER in Tulsa and after getting her admitted they could not treat her because of the Lupus so she was life flighted to OU Children's Medical Center. They completed a biopsy on her kidney, she was diagnosed by the Kidney Specialist with ESRD her kidney was functioning at less than 10%

While in the hospital they decided that dialysis was the only option for her. She immediately was sent back for her 1st surgery to place both the hemo-dialysis and fistula. She has now gotten a port so that she can perform peritoneal dialysis at home for 10 hours a day

In the coming months I will continue to care for Brooklyn and be here to make sure she is on her nightly dialysis regimen and taking all 15 of her meds. But there will be much more travel involved with making sure she is prepared for this surgery. The financial costs I am facing  will be something I have never faced before but we are staying strong and determined to push through.  I have tried to be super mom for a very long time and the truth is I must spend my time with my daughter and supporting her while trying to support my other children.

Donations
I am telling you our story because we are in urgent need your help. If you can make a financial donation to help us, we would be forever grateful. Anything will help nothing is too small or too grand. My daughter has so much to contribute to this world. She has so much art to express. She will grow up knowing that it was your heart and goodness that helped her have a fighting chance to live a full life again.  If you cannot donate, please share our story or share stories with us about people that have beat this awful disease and are living a life full of good health and happiness.
