The Millikan Middle School Music Program serves 200 LAUSD students from all over the San Fernando Valley. The musicians are comprised of all levels of music experience, from begining sixth graders to award winning Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra. We offer Afro-Carribean Percussion and Jazz Band as well as several Jazz Combos and Chamber Ensembles.
As you can imagine, a program of this caliber is very expensive to run. LAUSD offers very little in the way of support for these kids, so we must appeal to the community.
We are trying to raise funds for instrument up keep and repair, there is a string bass that requires $400 in repairs to make it playable. We need proper posture chairs for the musicians, violin and viola shoulder rests for the string classes. We currently have a 30 year old sound system and could really use an upgrade.
So many amazing professional musicians donate hours of their time to our kids. We would like to be able minimally to cover the costs they incur helping out the students.
These dedicated kids and their fabulous teachers give their all to this program. They practice for hours after school and spend many weekends travelling to music festivals and competitions. We need to sustain this program so this amazing opportunity will be available to future students.
