Exposing the cover up of the death of Colin Madsen

My name is Dana Madsen Calcutt and I'm the mother of Colin Madsen who disappeared on March 27, 2016 in Siberia, Russia, and was found murdered 8 days later.

Colin was studying abroad in Siberia, Russia. Wellbeing and health were very important to him, as well as advocating for the environment.  He felt at one with nature and he was an avid hiker. This is what took Colin and 3 friends to a cabin at the foot of "Love Peak" to prepare for the 2412 meter climb in the mystical mountains where Buddhist shamans live. This is the day Colin disappeared.

His friends reported him missing, and authorities initially suspected foul play...  from his friends.  Instead of searching for Colin, they spent the next 19 hours interrogating them with questions about alcohol use, drug use, and their sexual preference.

His body was discovered over a week later, in the green grass on a soft terrain.  Forensic testing by the Dutch Independent Forensic Services and a Swiss forensic pathologist determined that he was kept alive for several days, he was beaten, held, was suffocated, and moved after death.  The Russian authorities said that we could not see where he was found due to the "difficult and treacherous terrain" and that there were no witnesses due to this terrain.  We know now that this was false and he was found one mile away 500 meters off on access road and was on a IA trail and easy terrain.  The crime scene photos taken during by the Russian officials have been obtained and the pictures show at least 10 men sitting comfortably around where Colin was found.  Although I had to return to Siberia to get evidence in July of 2016, I never received the autopsy photos nor was the CCTV footage during the time of his disappeared ever recovered (they were "missing") even on April first 2016 when I was in Siberia to help in Colin's search.  I also asked (begged) for dogs daily and offered to pay for the dogs but I was told that since it started to snow that dogs would not be useful.

The authorities in Russia said that he had been high, stumbled around for days, and died of hypothermia. What started as an active murder investigation ended up a seemingly incomplete and quickly closed investigation.

Not only do I want justice, but I'm seeking for the dignity my son would've received in the USA. I am fighting amidst political strife between our two countries, with no procedures or protocol. I am fighting against prejudices. I am fighting for the safety of all students studying abroad. I am fighting for Human Rights.

The funding will go directly to our Human Rights attorneys in Russia (who have been awarded international recognition for their Human Rights advocacy). They have successfully forced authorities to reopen the case, but after two and a half years we can no longer continue funding on our own. We are asking for funds that will allow us to continue this legal effort for a further 18 months, to help us get justice for Colin and to expose human rights abuses. Based on our monthly expenses to date, we are requesting 75,000 USD.  If donations exceed the amount required to complete these goals, any additional monies will be sent to these Human Right’s attorneys to assist them with other cases.

Please help us in our fight.

Recently, I sent a payment to the attorneys funded by Colin's gofundme account; money that you gave to us to use to fight Human Rights abuses. I am honored to know you and your understanding that it will take a multinational group of supporters/advocates, persistence and the expertise of Human Rights attorneys to stand up for our human rights that are being slowly taken away.
Forever Grateful,
Dana Madsen Calcutt
