World famous Diggah' gets hosed down to keep her cool

The unprecedented heatwave in Los Angeles has required us to build many additional Tortoise Houses to keep all our animals safe and out of the deadly sun.

So far it is working. We haven’t lost any of our beloved critters—but we’ve exhausted all of our financial resources in the process.

Further compounding the problem, most of our volunteers including our ‘Adults with Disabilities’ volunteers have not been able to help us out as we couldn’t risk their health in this extreme heat. Even worse, the heatwave has all but halted our “Adopt A Tortoise” program —a vital source of revenue—while requests for us to take in tortoises are way up.

Without your generosity, TortoiseLand may be forced to turn away tortoises, turtles, and creatures of any kind and the fate of Digger, Hollywood Sushi, Leo the Leopard, Big Red, and the rest of our critters is in jeopardy.

Please don’t let this happen.

Diggah, ShyGurl, Ozzie the Iguana, Hollywood Sushi, Shakespeare, Bob the ‘possum and the rest of the gang thank you for your support!

TortoiseLand’s Proud Board Of Directors

One day in the life of TortoiseLand…

His arms chewed to the bone and bleeding to death in a cardboard box, Tikas was doomed.

Until an incredibly loving family saw the bloody box in a grocery store parking lot and called TortoiseLand for help.

When I saw Tikas, I cried.

I did not think he would survive the day. Worse, we had no funds to pay for the emergency medical care Tikas would need to survive.

Regardless, we blanketed Tikas with love, cleaned his wounds as best we could and hoped he would pass away knowing he was so loved and cared for.

But Tikas did not die!

He ate like there was no tomorrow and ran all over TortoiseLand like he owned the place. I knew from experience, though that without medical treatment, Tikas' severe wounds would kill him.

Though TortoiseLand had ZERO Emergency Medical Funds, we brought Tikas to Dr. Schacterly. She was stunned that Tikas was even alive.

After removing dead & decaying bone, muscle & skin and cleaning his open wounds, Dr. Shack feels that Tikas has an excellent chance to recover but we need your financial support as it will take several months of medical treatments restore his health and keep infection at bay.

Please help Tikas, and all the tortoises & turtles of TortoiseLand stay healthy by donating TODAY!

Every dollar helps and all donations are tax deductible.

Recently rescued 6 year old Desert Tortoise Dee (Delightful) came out of hibernation and was extremely weak—too weak to eat. So, we immediately took her in to amazing Dr. Karen Schacterly at Access Vet for a tube feeding, as well as calcium and and fluids injections. She’s slowly improving, but still very fragile and needs weekly medical care to save her life.

In addition to Dee, we have Sammy who we nicknamed "Blackie" due to his unusually dark color. He is an incredible 70-year old, really a just a kid in tortoise years. Unfortunately, Kevin has to put him in time out when he bobs his head and bites other tortoises. He has been suffering from a chronic respiratory condition. He has been battling this for several months and is undergoing weekly medicated nasal flushes to clear out his sinus system, injected antibiotics, along with a tube feeding and fluids.

Click here to see the latest video of Dee and Sammy after being treated, heading back to TortoiseLand.

It is hard to predict when any of our 70+ members of the TortoiseLand family will need veterinary care and we are having to dig deep for unplanned expenses to help Dee and Sammy. We would love to have funds set aside for their weekly care. Every dollar you give us will help us to continue to provide world class care for our tortoises!

TortoiseLand is a sanctuary for tortoises in Los Angeles, CA. Our 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization rescues, rehabilitates, rehomes tortoises and we educate the public about their vital importance in our world. Tortoises make fantastic companions, but some of these majestic creatures unfortunately end up sick, neglected, abandoned, or dead. Many species are endangered, and some are on the brink of extinction. Our mission is to make the world a better place for tortoises and save them before it’s too late.
