Hi, my name is Anwiti, and I am a high school student raising funds for the Leukemia Research Foundation as part of a personal service project through National Honor Society.

I’ve committed to walking 50 miles over the next few months to support leukemia research and raise awareness for cancer research overall.

In May of 2025, my uncle and godfather, Steve Potter, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML. Given there is no cure for AML, over the course of the past 4-5 months, he has been tirelessly fighting this disease with the support of family and friends. My uncle is one of the strongest people I know, finding humor and positivity even in the darkest of times. He is beloved by all and his personality, sense of humor and spirit for life are infectious.

He has dedicated his life to helping others as a social worker up in Anchorage, Alaska and he is a devoted father, friend, husband, and son. We’re a group of friends who’ve come together with one goal: to make a real difference in the fight against leukemia. This isn’t just a fundraiser—this is our way of standing up for the people who are fighting battles they never asked for. It’s for the families who sit in hospital rooms hoping for good news. It’s for the researchers who are working around the clock to find a cure.

Leukemia doesn’t care about age, background, or dreams. It can strike anyone, anytime. And while treatments have come a long way, there’s still so much work to be done. That’s why we’re organizing a fundraising event to support groundbreaking leukemia research—because we believe in a future where no one has to hear the words “you have leukemia” without hope.

We’re not doctors or scientists. We’re just people who care, and we know that even small actions can add up to big change. Every dollar raised will go directly toward research that’s saving lives and bringing us closer to a cure.

Dog Days is AEPi’s (Michigan State Chapter) spring philanthropy event. All donations from this fundraiser, along with all shirt and pie sales at the event will go to the Leukemia Research Foundation, in honor of Charley Bauer! Join us at Hockey for Hugh as we lace up our skates and fight leukemia one slapshot at a time - keeping the spirit of a brave young boy alive in the rink!

Hugh was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on July 17, 2019, before he reached the age of 10. He spent almost 2 years bravely fighting the disease at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, supported by his loving family and dedicated medical team. On May 12th, 2021, Hugh tragically lost his life, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and strength, six months before he reached his 12th birthday.

We have always said this about Jim: he works hard, he plays hard. But we also know this: he fights hard. It is his character. This man, our brother, husband, son, father, and friend, has incredible strength that we have all seen time and time again. It is this strength that has carried him victoriously across football fields, soared him as a Navy pilot, and brought him down to earth as a loving and stable rock of a husband and father, and most recently put him as a trusted leader of Utility Service Agency. So while we are utterly shocked and saddened to find out that the fatigue he had been experiencing is Leukemia (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia), we feel confident that Jim has what it takes to overcome and defeat cancer. 

Jim has undergone intensive introductory chemotherapy at Duke in Durham, NC and has recently returned home after 6 weeks in hospitals. And… he’s doing incredibly well! We await marching orders from his Oncology team regarding his next phase of treatment, which normally involves outpatient chemotherapy.

On December 4th, a small group of some of Jim Cooke’s biggest fans will be racing a 40 mile relay, the “Shakori 40 Ultra”. We will be running through the woods, mud, over hills, roots and rocks in Jim’s honor, raising awareness for Leukemia as well as raising money to benefit the Leukemia Research Foundation.
