Urgent Support Needed for Bunny Lu Adoptions
For 26 years, Bunny Lu Adoptions has been a beacon of hope for abandoned, neglected, and surrendered rabbits in Augusta County, Virginia. This dedicated 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue not only provides a safe haven but also educates the community on proper rabbit care and responsible pet ownership. However, Bunny Lu is now facing a critical challenge: a recent zoning decision threatens to shut down its operations, putting countless rabbits at risk and leaving the community without this vital resource. This zoning decision inaccurately categorized our 501(c)(3) home-based rescue as a business that sells rabbits and did not recognize that what we do is to instead facilitate adoption and provide special care for rabbits in need. Applying zoning laws meant for commercial operations to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit home-based rescue could undermine the mission of animal welfare everywhere.
The Challenge:
- Zoning Compliance: Bunny Lu has been deemed non-compliant with current zoning regulations, jeopardizing its ability to continue rescuing and rehabilitating rabbits. The zoning regulations cited against the rescue, specifically Augusta County Zoning Code § 25-135 Prohibited Uses, are intentionally left vague so that any complaint made to the county can be prosecuted, except for the few specific uses that the county government has already approved.
- Legal Defense: To appeal this decision and ensure the rescue can continue its lifesaving work, we need funds for legal defense. As a non-profit, we don't have the funds on hand to be able to afford legal representation against the county government.
