Hi, my name is Jane Mwangi from Kenya. On May 28, 2015 I was shot by thugs as I came home from a church service. The bullet went through my chest and fractured my spinal cord leaving me with paraplegia from the chest downwards. My eerie near death experience, as gruesome as it seemed at the time ignited a fighting spirit within me. I knew I had to dig deep and draw from the well of courage and hope.

Therefore around October of last year I decided to seek a second opinion from a leading neurosurgeon from a top private hospital on my progress and condition. Rigorous procedures later, and the verdict: paraplegia secondary to thoracic spinal cord injury. Simply, the doctor’s recommendation was intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation in a specialized dedicated unit in Europe or the US. There's no such unit in Kenya.

With the help of family and friends we identified a facility in the US, Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas. I gained admission on March 16, 2016. As a self-pay patient having travelled more than 8000 miles from Africa, funds ran out hence a great need to raise more money for continued rehabilitation. It has not been, and is not easy but I have had to stay the course.

I was inpatient for three and a half weeks after which I transitioned to outpatient rehabilitation. My hope of becoming independent and leading a normal life was now in the horizon. Following my outpatient rehabilitation, I then gained admission at Health South rehabilitation hospital also based in Dallas. I am now under their home health outpatient program. The specialized and top notch care offered here in America is invaluable to me. Hence my need to continue with the therapy.

I am appealing for your help to see me through this process. I truly believe that if you light a lamp for another, it will also lighten your path. And we indeed rise by lifting others. The grace of God has enabled me to come this far. I hold on to faith because faith is the daring of the soul to go farther than it can see. There must be a better tomorrow for I believe in a God who is the author and source of possibilities.

The bullet went through my chest and fractured my spinal cord leaving me with paraplegia from the chest downwards. I am now at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas for intensive therapy and am appealing for your help to see me through this process. We rise by lifting others and I have come this far by the grace of God which has enabled me to triumph over this adversity. I need your help for my inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, daily medical supplies, equipment to help make me independent with my daily self care and community access. My goal is to get back to work someday and campaign for people with disabilities in my home country. I believe God is the author and source of possibilities. Through your help I can be as independent as possible. God bless you as you reach out.
