Noa'ia 'e mḁuri gagaj 'atakoa! We are raising funds for Phase 2 of The Rotuma Project, the first-ever virtual tour of its kind dedicated to cultural, historical, and geographical preservation of an endangered Pacific Island, providing cutting-edge digital technology to give voice to the ancient tradition of oral history. Phase 1 of The Rotuma Project, the foundational platform to document the island of Rotuma, is now complete and has been shared at more than 30 presentations to Rotuma communities around the globe, first in Rotuma and before the Rotuma Island Council, then to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Hawai’i, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Phase 2 will include a return to the island of Rotuma and to Rotuman knowledge holders around the globe to expand on culturally rich content, research, documentation, and videos on some of the following: · Hanuju - oral history, myths, and legends (outreach, filmmaking) · Rotuma’s Historical & Cultural Sites (documentation, research) · Old Songs (documenting, filming, and researching the history of rare songs of old) · Sarao, traditional healing massage · Healing plants of Rotuma (research and document) · Katoaga - cultural practices and ceremonies · Education: Filmmaking & Virtual Tour workshop · More 3D scans and modeling · Launch of platform hosting in Rotuma · Additional presentations to Rotuman associations in the diaspora Project Scope: Using 360-degree photography and interactive digital design and storytelling, this project will take you on a virtual tour of Rotuma with stops along the way documenting cultural heritage, Rotuman wisdom, Rotuman language, geographic & ecological insight, and personal stories. Urgency of the Project: Preserving an Endangered Language: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed the Rotuman language as one of the most endangered languages in the world, with only 15,000 speakers globally. Approximately 1,500 Rotuman people currently live on the island. To date, it is undocumented how many individuals of Rotuman heritage exist around the world. Currently, Rotuman people are often left culturally uncategorized as a Pacific ethnic group. Urgency of the Project - Climate Change: Scientists are increasingly concerned that small island nations in the Pacific are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change as rising sea levels, storms, and coral bleaching increase due to environmental change. In Fiji alone, more than 40 low-lying communities are earmarked to be relocated to upper ground because of rapid sea level rise. Team: This project will be spearheaded by Jonathan Fong & Kathy Weber, first cousins descended from Savlei and Lau. Jonathan brings a wealth of professional videography, photography, and web development to the project. Kathy brings two decades of professional experience in journalism, storytelling, videography, graphic design, and public relations to the project. Together, these Rotuman cousins unite with a spirit of service, heart, and hard work, aiming to help create an interactive web tour of Rotuma for all of our kaunohoga to learn, honor, respect, appreciate, and preserve. Funding: To help support travel expenses, research, filming, video editing, digital storage, and graphic design, we are fundraising $25,000 to help supplement the personal expenses already going into the project. A donation of any amount will go toward phase two research, videography, editing, and storytelling to enhance our 360-degree virtual tour of Rotuma. Expenses include research, storytelling, basic language and translation information, cultural, geographic, and historical context to be embedded into the tour to create a content-rich tribute to our island heritage. Community Building: One of the aims of the project is to identify and connect the international community of Rotuman descendants. Through these connections, we seek to collaboratively explore our shared experiences in the diaspora, knowledge, wisdom, and shared desire to honor, respect, and preserve Rotuman cultural heritage. The ultimate purpose of community-building is to create space for our children and grandchildren to feel welcome to seek connections to their Rotuman heritage. Sustainability: We anticipate that through the development of this project, we may create a replicable model of cultural preservation and storytelling for Pasifika peoples, which is crucial given rising ocean levels affecting low-lying communities throughout Oceania. The founders of the project have a long-term vision and commitment to seeing this passion project come to life and to continue as a gift to all Rotuman peoples. Moving forward through the project, we seek partners to share their knowledge, time, and talents to keep The Rotuma Project a living and dynamic curation of cultural content. In the future, we hope to engage Rotuman youth so they may also gain valuable cultural and mentored professional experience in working on the project.
