Suicide Awareness

At Shaw we strive to be an industry leader in Work, Health and Safety practices.
Whilst we recognise a safe workplace is paramount to everyone’s success, the wellbeing of our people and colleagues within the industry is of equal importance. Shaw has recently been made aware that;
• Every year 190 Australians working in the construction industry take their own lives
• Construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work
• Young construction workers are twice as likely to take their own lives than other young Australian men
Research has shown that construction workers find it difficult to discuss feelings and emotions with colleagues at work and the nature of the work makes social support difficult. Pride has been identified as the issue leading people to falsely believe it is perceived as weak, to declare they have a problem.
These alarming statistics and facts are simply unacceptable.
Shaw has a unique opportunity to work with the St Patricks Old Collegians Football Club to raise funds for Beyond Blue – the foundation established to raise awareness of anxiety, depreciation and suicide.
The St Patricks Old Collegians Football Club will be hosting a fund raiser on Saturday 25th June 2016 at its home game against Perth. Shaw Contracting is calling on all its friends and communities to help it support the Clubs initiative, by making a small contribution to this great cause.
Together we can make a difference.
