San Ysidro High School is one of 9 schools using GoFundMe to help provide Chromebooks for their students as a part of the GoFundMe Chromebook Challenge. Until March 22nd, we are competing to see which school can get the most Facebook shares from this GoFundMe campaign.
- The school with the most Facebook shares will receive 100 Chromebooks.
- Every dollar donated to this campaign will be used to purchase Chromebooks. GoFundMe will match the first $5,000 donated to this campaign.

San Ysidro High School is located south of San Diego, just 1 mile from the Mexican border in one of the poorest communities in the country. Our students and staff come to school every day with a mission to prove stereotypes wrong and achieve success in a global economy. Our students are mostly bilingual 1st- 4th generation Hispanics, over 90% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch. Because of the location and demographic, the community has been historically underserved and isolated from nearby San Diego, despite being a part of one of the largest school districts in California. As educators, we want to give our students equity-- and having access to Chromebooks and other technology is part of that.
Many of our parents work long hours at two or three jobs, often working the late shift. This means that our school is sometimes the only place our kids get good meals, and experience a familial atmosphere where they are known by teachers, staff and fellow students. We are proud of how caring our students and school community are - each student gets greeted by name when they first walk on campus in the morning. We rarely have any violence at school due to how much our students care about each other - maybe one fight a year. We are extremely proud of this as it shows the amount of respect that we cultivate for each other.
“Despite the many obstacles we face, we are committed to achieving our goals and dreams. We have the desire to succeed and the determination to prove stereotypes wrong. Many times, our parents cannot see us off in the morning because they have already been at work for several hours, or they haven’t returned from the late shift. This doesn’t mean they aren’t committed. We have the largest number of registered parent volunteers in the district!” - Katia Fernandez
As a school, our mission is to graduate students who are prepared to succeed in a global economy, and to become agents of change for their community. This means we need to integrate more technology into our classrooms so students can learn how to create documents, creatively share ideas through videos and collaboration, and become familiar with how to apply to colleges and jobs online.
Currently, the school has five computer labs for 2,500 students to share, and most don’t have computers at home. The doesn’t provide each student enough time to become comfortable navigating the devices the way more affluent students are from regularly spending time on the computer both at school and at home.

Nuestros estudiantes y el personal llegan a la escuela todos los días con una misión para probar que no hay los estereotipos mal y lograr el éxito en una economía global. Nuestros estudiantes son en su mayoría bilingües hispanos de primera a cuarta generación, más del 90% de los cuales califican para el almuerzo gratis o reducido. Debido a la ubicación y demográfica, la comunidad ha sido históricamente marginada y aislada de la cercana San Diego, a pesar de ser una parte de uno de los distritos escolares más grandes en California. Como educadores, queremos dar a nuestros estudiantes igualdad y que tengan acceso a los Chromebooks y otra tecnología es parte de eso.
Muchos de nuestros padres trabajan durante largas horas a dos o tres puestos de trabajo, a menudo trabajando en el turno tarde. Esto significa que nuestra escuela es a veces el único lugar que los niños obtienen buenas comidas, y la experiencia de un ambiente familiar donde son conocidos por los profesores, el personal y compañeros de estudios. Estamos orgullosos de cómo cuidamos a nuestros estudiantes y la comunidad - cada estudiante se saludó por su nombre cuando por primera vez pie en el campus de la mañana. Raramente tenemos ningún tipo de violencia en la escuela debido a la cantidad de nuestros estudiantes porque se preocupan unos de otros - tal vez una pelea un año. Estamos muy orgullosos de esto, ya que muestra la calidad de respeto que cultivamos uno para el otro.

Nuestra misión es para preparar los estudiantes a tener éxito en una economía global, y para ayudarlos de mejorar su comunidad. Esto significa que tenemos que integrar más tecnología en los salones para que los estudiantes puedan aprender cómo crear documentos, compartir ideas de forma creativa a través de videos y la colaboración, y familiarizarse con solicitudes de ingreso a las universidades y puestos de trabajo al internet.
Ahora, la escuela tiene cinco salones de computadoras para 2,500 estudiantes, y la mayoría de los estudiantes no tienen computadoras en casa. Este no permite que los estudiantes tengan suficiente tiempo para navegar la computadora en su hogar. Mientras que, los estudiantes de la clase alta tiene más posibilidades porque tiene las comodidades y medios para hacerlo.
