Hi, my name is Havana and I am 7 years old.
When I grow up, I want to be an astronaut, POTUS, and an artist.

Since I was born, I have been traveling the world with my diplomat family. I currently live in Washington DC. You can find me on Twitter:
www.twitter.com/thetinydiplomat

I just returned last week from Ghana where Taylor Richardson and I shared our dreams of becoming astronauts, as well as our passion for reading and literacy to get there.

Together we raised over $25,000 to fly to Ghana and donate books and many other supplies to the 17 girls at the St. Bakhita Orphanage. (www.gofundme.com/rhymersarereaders)

Our goal was to encourage these young girls in STEM as well as conquering any goals and dreams they have.

Additionally, one of the donors from my last campaign is sending me to family space camp in Huntsville, Alabama at the end of August. I am really excited to continue learning more about space on my journey to becoming an astronaut when I grow up. (https://www.spacecamp.com/space/family)

Going to space camp is really important to me because I will get to launch on simulated missions to the International Space Station.
I will get to train like a real NASA
astronaut on the Multi-Axis Trainer and the 1/6th Gravity Chair, make my own model rocket, and learn about space exploration and amazing people like my (s)hero Dr. Mae Jemison. This would be a dream come true for me!

But to make this dream into a reality, I need your help. I need to raise $1000 for the plane tickets to Alabama and one of my parents to go with me by August 15th.

Any and all donations are appreciated to help me reach my goal!!

I partner with Mahogany Books in Southeast Washington DC for a story hour each week as well as run a book club for the kids in my choir. Any extra funds will go towards buying more books for kids in my community and in my book club.

To the stars, Havana (with help from my parents)

The Tiny Diplomat Goes To Space Camp

Hello everyone,

Thanks to so many generous people donating to our previous GoFundMe campaigns, we have been able to support and champion girls all over the world.

Havana’s Rhymers are Readers #37books and Taylor’s Wrinkle in Time movie and book drive were started because we know that education is the most powerful weapon in the world. We know as Black girls that we are capable, powerful, and unstoppable.

We both want to be astronauts when we grow up and having a good education is a big part of that dream. However, our dreams are not just about us. Every girl around the world has the basic human right to an education.

Last year, we traveled to Ghana to meet 17 amazing girls at the St. Bakhita Orphanage in Ghana. With your help, we continued to support them from the United States by sending toiletries, books, school supplies, etc. throughout the year.

We are so excited to be able to return to Ghana in March 2020. This time we have partnered with KIDBOX and Delivering Good. Their mission is similar to ours and they believe that we can’t make the world strong if we leave people behind.

KIDBOX and Delivering Good have given us $15,000 in clothing for the girls at the orphanage so they can look their best going to interviews, meetings, school, and all kinds of important events. Girl’s Education in Ghana

This past summer, Taylor Richardson (Astronaut StarBright ) and I (The Tiny Diplomat) worked together and raised funds to travel to Ghana and meet 17 amazing girls at the St. Bakhita orphanage. By raising $25,000 as well as generous doantions from female led organizations , we were able to donate books, school supplies, toiletries, clothes, and did a screening of Disney and Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time .

Most importantly, we got to hang out with the girls in their home, dance, play, and learn more about what these girls see in their future. These 17 girls are studying and working hard to make an impact in their community in Ghana, and we want to show them that we believe in them. These 17 girls are role models, leaders, and our friends.

One of the biggest obstacles these girl are facing is the lack of access to education all year round. This holiday season, we would like to raise money to help our new friends stay in school and reach their potential!

There is no cost for tuition in Ghana for public schools, so your donations will go towards:

- Exam fees
- Uniforms and shoes
- School Supplies
- Feminine hygiene products
- Transport costs
**Currently all 17 girls walk 2 miles each way to school. When they go long distances for events, all 17 girls ride without seat belts in a 7 passenger SUV if they don't have money for a taxi.

We are withdrawing the funds and giving the money to the St. Bakhita orphanage liaison in the United States.

There are 3 ways to donate to support our cause:

1. Make a donation to our GoFundMe.
2. Make a donation in kind from your organization. To arrange to ship products to Washington DC or internationally to Ghana, please email us.
3. Purchase an "Unstoppable" shirt/hoodie and all proceeds will go towards the St. Bakhita orphanage: https://bit.ly/2R9pRJb

We want to to reach our goal by the end of January to help give these 17 amazing girls at the St. Bakhita orphanage the chance to break down the physical, cultural, and financial barriers that keep them from getting an education and fulfilling their potential.

We want to encourage people around the world to take action in support of girls education by donating as much as we can towards these costs.
Because like our forever First Lady Michelle Obama says, “The future of our world is only as bright as our girls.”

Thank you for your help with our project! We know we have the best support and are SO grateful to everyone who believes in us and believes that we are unstoppable to fight for girls around the world.

Love, Havana and Taylor

“We know that if we want to live in a world that looks more like Wakanda, the first step is you invest in some women and girls." — Kalis Danai

St. Bakhita Orphanage

Hello everyone,

My name is Havana Chapman-Edwards (@thetinydiplomat). My friend Mari Copeny (@LittleMissFlint) and I have joined together this holiday season to bring Black Girl Ballerina Magic to Flint, MI.

Since Mari and I both love to dance, we LOVE seeing Misty Copeland, the first African American prima ballerina at the American Ballet Association, featured in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms movie. My name is Havana and as many of you know, I previously raised over $6000 to buy books for the kids in my choir/book club "Rhymers are Readers #37books."

I also had the opportunity to travel all the way to Ghana with Taylor Richardson "Astronaut StarBright" to deliver books and school supplies to the 17 girls at the St. Bakhita Orphanage.

Now, I want to do the same for the kids in my own community. Back to School Drive

Hello everyone,

As you know already, COVID-19 is having a terrible impact on families and communities across the country and around the world.

When times are hard, there are always kind helpers who step up and take again. For example, adults like Fred Joseph’s and The Conscious Kid’s #RENTRELIEF GoFundMe campaigns have raised nearly a half a million dollars to families are hurting, can’t make rent, can’t afford their bills to keep the lights on, and can’t afford groceries.

However, Parker and I know that kids need help right now too and the biggest issue is that school is closed.

That means kids are not having access to the education they need, and that is why we are launching #readingisessential.

We partnered with Giving Tuesday Kids for #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving and unity on May 5, 2020, an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19 to send books to as many children as we can who need them.

What our #readingisessential campaign will do:

1. Give as many kids as we can a copy of PARKER LOOKS UP to hold in their hands (Priority for donating books goes to kids who may not have access to adequate online resources while school is closed.)

2. Support our local independent bookstore, MahoganyBooks to keep their doors open to the DC community who needs them (before they opened, Southeast DC was a book desert for 20 years.)

3. Inspire and rally more kids around the world to take action in their community and create and epic moment of generosity on May 5, 2020 for #GivingTuesdayNow.

**We’ll post all gift certificates on our Instagram stories and Twitter so people know exactly where every dollar is going.**

If you’d like to join us and help kids whose families cannot afford books for their home library while school is closed after they pay for essentials, you can donate to this GoFundMe.

During this time of social distancing and isolation, we can still come together to support one another.

Can we get to $500? That means we’ll be able to help 20 kids during this difficult time while school is closed.

$1,000? That means 40 kids can enjoy a book of their own at home.

Times are tough. People need help. Let’s take action.

Love,
Havana and Parker (with help from our parents)

Ps. If you or your kids are in need of books at home while school is closed, post a comment on our Instagram or Twitter #readingisessential campaign posts on 5/5.

Havana Instagram | Havana Twitter

Parker Instagram | Parker Twitter

COVID19 #ReadingIsEssential

My name is Havana and I am 7 years old. I am raising money to buy books for other children who look like me! Reading is so important and I want to make sure everyone has the same opportunities to learn, grow, and change the world.

Scholastic did a study this year that shows black and brown children have 37 fewer books in their homes than white children. They also found that only 18% of African American 4th graders are proficient readers. I want to help change that.

My original goal was to help all 12 of my choir friends to feel confident in their reading ability and to see kids who look like them in the books they read. Every month, I am going to host a book club and read aloud a book about an amazing female black role model. Girls and boys need to see strong black females in their books. I call these women and girls “sheroes".

Thanks to all of you, I was able to give each one of my choir friends 37 books! I even partnered with our local bookstore, Mahogany Books, a Black-owned business in Southeast Washington D.C. to purchase the books. Now all of my friends also have the ability to read at home like their classmates and can learn to read and travel the world through the pages of our books!

But I don’t want to stop here. I’m teaming up with my friend Taylor Richardson, aka Astronaut StarBright, to take books all the way to Ghana this summer. With the support of Oprah, Chris Pine, GMA, and hundreds of others, Taylor has sent over 1,000 girls all over the United States to see A Wrinkle in Time. Now she wants to help me bring books to girls all over the world too!

My godmother and one of my greatest STEM role models, LaSheena Washington, volunteers at a local orphanage clinic in Accra, Ghana where there are 17 young Ghanaian girls, ages 3-17. Taylor and I are working to raise money so we can hand deliver books and DVDs of A Wrinkle in Time movie each of these beautiful girls.

These girls need books so that they can take pride in who they are and know that they are more than capable of being anything they put their minds to. We also want to show them that they too have #blackgirlmagic inside of them.

Here is where you come in! We need your help to raise enough money for us to buy books and bring them to the girls in Ghana. I think being able to give them the books in person will be really special.
We need to raise $15,000 by June 15th to pay for the books as well as flights for Taylor and I (and our Moms too), a hotel, the Visas and shots we need to travel to Ghana, and other miscellaneous travel expenses. Any extra money we raise will go towards giving books to children of needy families in the Jacksonville and Washington DC communities where we live.

Every donation makes a difference and by supporting this project, you are helping to make sure that black children have a fair chance at academic success. ALL kids should have equal opportunities in their education and by having books, you can help these children change the world, one bedtime story at a time!

Love, Havana
(And my mama and daddy who are helping me)

_______________________________________________________

If you are an author or work in a bookstore and want to donate your books instead of money, you can send the books directly to us!

Rhymers are Readers #37books
c/o Woodlawn-Faith Methodist Church
7010 Harrison Lane
Alexandria, VA 22306

I am student in Kailua, Hawai'i on the island of Oahu, and our Girls Have Rights non-profit team is collaborating with our Boys and Girls Club- Windward Clubhouse to raise funds to take 100 members to see the movie Moana 2 on December 14th, 2024.

I am a paddler for Lanikai Canoe Club and seeing a character like Moana with her paddle, her lei po'o, pet chicken HeiHei, and yelling cheehoo for the world to see is so important for so many keiki (youth) on our island.

Hey y'all, it's Taylor aka Astronaut Starbright

You may have seen one of my many fundraisers like Hidden Figures, A Wrinkle in Time, The Little Mermaid, and Captain Marvel before.

In the past 10 years through my movie challenges, I have raised nearly $200,000 to advocate for young kids, especially young girls, to see a hero that looks like them, showing that they too can overcome obstacles and shape their own futures.

Our amazing Girls Have Rights team chose this project for Giving Tuesday because it is meaningful and critical to celebrate Polynesian culture through representation on the big screen. Additionally, the Moana movie continues the legacy of empowering girls to dream even bigger than they think possible.

Taylor and Havana have both been given so much from our experiences at the Boys and Girls Club in our communities and it's an honor to pay it forward with this project.

The mission of Girls Have Rights is to empower and uplift girls around the world, and Moana's character honors that mission perfectly.

We will be taking Boys and Girls Club members to see the movie at Kailua Theaters, so the money raised will go towards movie tickets and transportation.

Every $ counts; donating just $10 allows us to buy 1 ticket for a student to enjoy our celebration.

If we are able to raise extra funds, they will be donated to the five other Boys and Girls Clubs on the island so that as many keiki can enjoy the movie as possible.

(Nanakuli, Kapa'a, Honolulu, Waianae, Ewa Beach)

Send Boys and Girls Club Hawaii to Moana 2

Hello everyone,

My STEM sis Havana and I are back again and we are working on a very special and exciting project! We would like to challenge you to join us for the #blackgirljoychallenge where we will be delivering STEM gifts to Black girls in the United States, and around the world, during the holiday season.

In case you haven’t heard, Girls Have Rights is a youth led global non-profit that aims to eliminate obstacles and barriers so girls have access to their basic human rights. Havana is the Executive Director and I am the Director of STEM Education.

One of our goals for Girls Have Rights is to make it more attainable for girls to reach their STEM goals. Not only do we want to encourage girls in pursuing STEM careers, we want to help ensure critical resources are available so that there is more equity in education. When Black girls systemically have less access to resources, they fall behind their peers academically.

This is why our goal by Giving Tuesday on November 30th is to raise $2500 to donate STEM resources as gifts to girls in communities all over the United States, refugee children from Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, and Syria who live in Germany, as well as to the 17 girls at the St. Bahkita orphanage in Ghana we have supported for over 4 years now.
