 Hello, my name is Erika and I am Doctor Dani’s youngest daughter. Recently, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I never imagined I would be writing these words or asking her community for help. My sister, Ayla, and I agree our mom is the most hardworking person we know and is incredibly strong, dedicated, and resilient. She has been navigating the difficult news and is approaching this journey - or as she calls it an “opportunity”- with determination and hope. She is working with an amazing team, preparing for surgery, and exploring every avenue of care and healing.

Support Doctor Dani’s breast cancer journey

<div>In the fall of 2024, an unexpected family crisis dramatically changed my friend’s life and significantly limited her ability to manage her small business, while also deeply impacting her husband’s separate small business. As licensed foster care providers, she and her husband were asked to take temporary custody of her husband’s 9-year-old and 10-year-old great nephews due to their parents’ substance abuse.

<div>One child has Angelman syndrome, leaving him wheelchair-bound, nonverbal, and prone to frequent seizures. He requires continuous, 24-hour care. His younger brother faces complex psychiatric challenges. When the boys arrived, one was experiencing multiple breakthrough seizures daily, while the other struggled to sleep because he feared what would come next. Toxicology reports later revealed both children had been exposed to extraordinarily high levels of illicit substances.

<div>After extensive involvement with social services, Ray and Kody were granted permanent physical and legal custody in September 2025. They currently operate two small businesses: an electrical contracting business and a pet supply and grooming store. Kody will continue to operate the electrical contracting business, while Ray’s longer-term objective is to stabilize their day-to-day reality and eventually return to corporate advisory work once their caregiving responsibilities allow for more consistent scheduling.

<div>Their rural community has shown meaningful support. The local school district purchased a handicap-accessible van, and a local veterans group helped during their first Christmas.

<div>Even with this generosity, the challenges have remained significant. Between ongoing medical emergencies, specialist appointments, a 10-day ICU stay, and the daily realities of raising two high-needs children, my friend and her husband have struggled to sustain the businesses that once provided stability for their family.

<div>As Hurricane Milton, a CAT2 storm, rolled through Lakeland/Polk County early Thursday morning, Kiersta and her family were huddled in their home praying for safety. Unfortunately, a huge oak tree in their yard succumbed to the winds and rain and crashed into the house, penetrating the roof and opening them to the storm. That she and her family, including two of my granddaughters, were not hit and seriously injured is simply divine intervention. We were able to rescue them in the midst of the storm and get them to safety.

<div>On Thursday August 15th, 2024, <strong>our parents' house caught on fire</strong> in Citrus Heights, CA and the nightmare began. Although the structure still stands, my family lost everything. Melissa suffered 3rd degree burns on an estimated amount of over 60% of her body and is currently in The UC Davis burn center. Our mother will need numerous skin grafts, rehab, and months of medical therapy.

<div>Melissa suffered a stroke that left her wheelchair-bound and unable to walk in February of this year, which made it difficult to get her out of the house. Thankfully, she was recovered and lived, but she has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Tragically, our beloved Misty (a 4-month-old ragdoll kitty) lost her precious little life and our family is torn to pieces over the loss of her life.

<div><strong>Estimated loss is at over $380,000</strong> with vehicles, clothes, furniture, and so much more. The only things that survived the fire were what was on our parents' backs. Thankfully, the family dog Maya and Misty’s other feline siblings Molly and Boots did make it out. My dad David suffered a few 3rd degree burns when he attempted to run inside and save his wife’s life but the fire was too big and too fierce to make it to her.

<div>David is now on FMLA with no prediction of when (or if) he will make it back to work. Times are hard right now and none of us are going to pretend like everything is going to be ok. Our hopes are one day we can make it to some sort of normal, and move on from this absolutely unbelievable accident. If you can in any way help our family, we would be so appreciative. </div>

<div>My firstborn son, Max Andrew Lenowitz, left his beautiful, perfect, earthly body. It was his 25th birthday. He died of fentanyl poisoning. He was found with Xanax. Prescription Xanax is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Only this was not prescribed by a doctor. We don't know where he got it from. But the Xanax was identified as counterfeit and contained a lethal dose of fentanyl.

</div>
<div>Born at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J. and named after my super smart childhood cat (no joke), Max began walking, and then running, at 9 months old. Just like the cat he was named after, there wasn’t a roof Max wouldn’t climb, a ball he wouldn’t dominate, or mischief he could pass up. Ever.
</div>

<div>A Montessori House &amp; Village School kid from preschool through 5th grade, Max thrived in that type of learning environment.
</div>

</div>
<div>From a very early age, Max had an abundance of energy and a zest for creating new adventures. In Old Tappan, he would ride all day with his best friend on a bike or skateboard, climb the tippy top of a jungle gym or tree, or spend all-day swimming and doing flips in the pool. Much to his little brother’s chagrin, Max loved physical contact too, and thus, he earned his Tae Kwon Do Blackbelt at 11 years old.

<div>We moved to Woodcliff Lake N.J. in his middle school years. Max being Max, made new friends at Dorchester effortlessly.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When entering high school at Pascack Hills in Montvale, Max conveyed an unmistakable confidence on the outside and carried a big sensitive heart on the inside. Succeeding at varsity lacrosse and receiving a Senate &amp; General Assembly commendation and praise citation for his athletic abilities, this cool cat also required endless affection, attention and snuggles from his Momma. And this Momma ate up every second of it.

<div>Max was a great writer too. He loved to read and had a great imagination. He scored a 32 in writing on his ACT—and that was without any significant effort, I can assure you. In high school, lacrosse and his social life came first.
</div>

</div>
<div>Max's friend circle was vast and deep. And he had the absolute best friends too. His loyal "brothers" as he called them, and his loving "sister" girlfriends he adored. He was loved and blessed. And they were loved and blessed by him too.
</div>

<div>Max is the oldest of 3, and couldn't have been prouder of his brother Zac and his sister Elena. To Max, they were perfect and could do no wrong.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He went on to study and play lacrosse at Whittier College in California. One of the main reasons he chose to go to school so far away is that he craved adventure and needed to be near a beach. Nature, sunrises and sunsets, and being near the ocean were his absolute favorites.
</div>

</div>
<div>Max could push my buttons for sure, but he always made up for it with love and a deeper more profound connection between us. I called him my gift from God, and I meant it. When I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2021, Max came home every three weeks to be with me following my chemotherapy treatments. I would plead with him, "Max, please don't come home when I get my chemo. I'm so sick and weak when I leave the hospital, and can't move from my bed." And he replied, "So I will lie in bed with you Momma." And he did. This went on for 6 months. Forget the chemo, Max was my medicine.
</div>

</div>
<div>I loved how he emphasized learning something new to maximize his human experience. He deeply appreciated art, movies, music, travel, kids, and all animals, especially our German Shepherd, Kiki. What a great &amp; wise soul he had--an experiential learner. His stepdad &amp; I called him a sage. It's true.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>One of his best friends sat with me the other day and called him a giver and a light. He said he had a beautiful warm soul, he was a great listener and loving friend, and his genuine smile &amp; laughter made it impossible not to reciprocate.
</div>

<div>FENTANYL WAS THE END OF THAT LIGHT.

<div>Like so many other families suffering the loss of a loved one due to fentanyl poisoning in New Jersey and across the U.S., I knew we had to do something about this epidemic. And I believe Max is giving me the courage to do so.

<div>Our Beloved Julianne was diagnosed with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Breast Cancer a few months ago.  There are still many unknowns as to whether it will metastasize in the body or if she will lose her breasts. She is now in the second phase of chemotherapy, and it has become increasingly difficult for her and she is in need of our support.

<div>In August, 2023, Glodean caught a cold that ended with a persistent hacking cough. By November, that cough led to a bronchoscopy (biopsy) that diagnosed her with Stage III non-small cell lung cancer. A week later, after a follow-up MRI and PET scan, it was upgraded to Stage IV because the cancer has spread to her brain, adrenal glands, and stomach. This is just the beginning of her journey and we know she’s not going down without a fight. No matter what cards she’s been dealt in life, she always manages to hold on to her positive attitude and finds reason to share her smile with the world.

<div>While in Italy on a trip for a friend’s wedding, Michael Shelton was involved in a tragic accident on May 23, 2023. He was walking down a steep set of stairs in Positano, Italy, and fell off a 65 foot cliff. Michael was tended to by an emergency rescue team and airlifted to a hospital in Naples, Italy where he remains in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator.

<div>Michael’s injuries consist of two broken legs, broken ribs, head trauma, chest trauma (fragments of bone throughout chest), cervical trauma, lung contusions, and internal bleeding. Although he is in stable condition, the true condition of Michael’s health is undetermined until his body heals sufficiently to wake him from the medically induced coma. It’s truly a miracle Michael survived this tragic accident.

<div>Immediately upon hearing the news of the accident, Michael’s family rushed to Italy to be by his side, and is expected to remain in Italy for several months. Due to the event taking place in a foreign country, the medical costs and the amount covered by insurance are unknown. We have been advised that he will have a long road to recovery. He will require a medical transport back to Southern California for repatriation, and then will need to remain in an inpatient physical therapy facility for several months.

<div>Michael Shelton is 33 years old and was born in Thousand Oaks, CA to Pat and Sheri Shelton. He has an identical twin brother, Tyler, and two older sisters, Sam and Danielle. He currently resides in Santa Monica, CA with his girlfriend, Gaby. He is one of the most loving, caring, and generous people we know. He has spent his life putting the needs of others before his own, and has never asked for anything in return. For example, Michael keeps restaurant gift cards with him at all times and provides them to the homeless when they cross his path. All who knows him know that his presence fills any room with joy.

<div>Melissa just lost her husband Jason to a tragic accident at their family home in Drum Forebay on Wednesday 3/29/23.

<div> The Cassem’s had purchased their dream home in March 2022. This being their first winter here. Living at that elevation can present many challenges but as most people know, this has been a particularly challenging year when it comes to snow. Receiving feet of snow with each incoming storm.

<div> Most recently this week a storm had dropped at least a few more feet of snow at their home. On Wednesday, they lost power. Which is common in these mountains. They’ve been setup with a whole house generator since the purchase of their home. They dealt with the outage all day long with no estimated time of restoration in sight. At night it was time for the kids to take their nightly showers and the family decided they would all watch a movie together before heading to bed. Jason told Melissa he would go put more fuel in the generator so they could all watch their movie. The kids got into their showers and Melissa was preparing for the next day. The day before this occurred, Melissa and her family had just celebrated her birthday. A short time had passed since he had gone outside and she realized Jason had not returned. She was worried so she walked outside and called out his name. Keep in mind it’s night time, the power was out and seeing anything was difficult. When he didn’t answer her she walked out towards the generator with a flashlight in hand to find a large snow bank had collapsed and her husband was trapped inside. She immediately started trying to dig him out. The opening at the top for this collapsed snow bank was very small and she was in extremely deep snow. She found Jason and started performing CPR. But at the same time she kept having to try to climb to the top to breathe in fresh air. Then she would continue down again and gave Jason chest compressions. Each time she would go up, more snow was caving in on them. At this point she was desperate for help. She started screaming “Please help call 911” hoping a neighbor would hear her. Her 11 year old daughter Juliana and 10 year old son Geoffrey heard her screams and ran outside to find their Mom pleading for help. The kids had just gotten out of their showers so both of them were barely in their pajamas at this point. Cell reception in this area isn’t the greatest but Juliana was finally able to call 911. Due to their remote location, the roads not plowed and a few feet of snow, it took crews some time to reach the home. In the mean time, the fire dispatchers stayed on the line with Juliana and Geoffrey instructing them to find something in the house to try and dig out their parents. They were told to grab pots and pans from the kitchen and they instructed them to try and dig through the snow to get to their parents. An off duty firefighter that is also a neighbor got word of what was happening and quickly responded to the home to help dig them out.

<div> Finally crews reached their home, performed CPR but unfortunately Jason did not make it. When the snow caved in right next to the generator with Jason under it all, he died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

<div> Melissa and the kids are beyond devastated. Their lives have changed forever and the emotional trauma they endured will be something they will never forget.

But I do know that she will not be able to or even want to live in the home in the future. It’s where her husband suffered a tragic death. LaKeith was charged for A’Donte’s death even though Lakeith did NOT hurt or kill anyone, and there is no argument by anyone, including the state of Alabama, the officers are the one who shot A’donte in the back while he was running away, killing him. However, rather than charging the officers responsible with the death, they used the felony murder law, which should not apply in this case, to charge my son LaKeith.

<div>LaKeith was originally incarcerated in 2015, at age 15, and has been there ever since, in the HIGHEST LEVEL maximum security prison in Alabama. I have sacrificed EVERYTHING to bring my baby home. I have missed work for court appearances, rallies, and community engagements, the financial toll on me has been significant. <div>Hi, I'm Christine Love-MacLeod, and my husband, Ainslie MacLeod and I are raising money for our beloved daughter (India) and son-in-law (Jason) who have been going through one of the most challenging experiences a parent could imagine.

<div>Their youngest son, 15-month-old Henning (twin brother to sister Juniper, and little brother to five-year-old Wolf) has been extremely ill in the hospital since February 13th with bacterial meningitis, Haemophilus influenzae, coronavirus (not c-19), and sepsis. The doctors say that what he has is among the more rarer forms of the disease, and because it took them a while to properly diagnose him, the bacteria unfortunately made its way into his blood. If you know anything about bacterial meningitis, you know the recovery statistics aren't great, especially not for young children.

<div>He's been fighting for his life this past week, and while he's made some progress in the past 24 hours that has us all weeping with joy, he's not out of the danger zone yet. And to add to the already monumental stress load for his parents, they have looming medical bills coming their way, after already losing significant wages from not being able to work.

<div>Henning (and his siblings) are a light in this world that can often feel so dark. Of the three, Henning especially is a sensitive old soul (a Creator type for those of you familiar with Ainslie's work), and such a sweet and precious little boy. His parents are good, kind, and loving people who are raising all three of their children to also be compassionate and sensitive - the kinds of people we need more of in the world.

<div>Even if Henning makes it through, which we're very hopeful he will (thanks in part to all the prayers and blessings he's received so far, and the excellent care he’s been receiving at Bronson’s Children’s Hospital in Kalamazoo - thank you!), we don't know yet what kind of repercussions there will be from such a serious illness. And the expenses could likely climb even higher than they already are.

<div>India and Jason recently moved to a small town in southwest Michigan where they've worked very hard and sunk everything they had to create a cafe and theatre space (The Lucky Wolf Paw Paw) in their little town to bring people together over food, music, and entertainment. This Beautiful Family of Five Needs Your Help

Their first year has been a real struggle: adapting to a new country, waiting for work documents, starting at new schools, learning a new language, and so on… Unfortunately, the adjustment is still ongoing and we know the road ahead will not be easy.
