Walk = to be alive
Steps to life
I am setting up this page on behalf of my colleague Audrius who's son was severely injured in a tragic accident which has left him paralysed.
We are hoping to raise enough money to pay for medical equipment - ReWalk Personal 6.0 System. This is not only a machine that enable a paralysed person to walk, it has got even more significant impact on their health. The device increase bone density, restore and prevent muscle atrophy, improve bladder and bowel functions, and the most important it helps to boost mental wellbeing.
The Stankevicius family have exhausted all their life savings to care for their son & are working night and day to provide for everything he needs but it's not enough.
A note from Mr Stankevicius' father:
PLEASE HELP
My name is Audrius and we live in Scotland.. Approximately six years ago, my currently 28-year-old son, Ignas, was struck by an accident that broke his spine. He became paralysed from the waist down and is now disabled and only mobile with the use of a wheelchair. The doctors who treated him said that it was a miracle he even survived it.
Before the accident, he was a normal young man who worked, was engaged into sports and enjoyed life, following his own hopes and dreams. However, after the event that took place ourlives were changed dramatically. The most painful feeling is to watch him plunging into deep depression. It was determined not by just his confinement to a wheelchair but also by the additional medical consequences such as development of sores due to constant sitting position and muscle atrophy. The situation became particularly bad, when he returned to his studies and sitting the prolonged time in a wheelchair during studies led to a development of the pressure sores, which resulted to horrible complications such as sepsis and later a very complex surgery. Last year he was hospitalized six times and we almost lost him for the second time.
We took any measures we could in an effort to rehabilitate him, however most of these things had a price and our financial savings and capability was exhausted completely. One of the last things that could still help him is a ReWalk Personal 6.0 System., which is beyond our financial capacity.
The device is something that has a medical and psychological benefit and can help to regenerate the muscles of legs, back and stomach from atrophy that would eventually be irreversible if left untreated. As well as serving this function the device also strengthens the blood vessels as well as the flow of blood itself to prevent thrombosis (blood clotting) from forming in the body. The atrophy that the muscles of his paralysed lower body have suffered has caused sores to form from the pressure of the bones, which are also meticulously hard to heal (the reason for which is that the lower body does not have any contact with the brain, thus it does not register the injury in a way a normal body would).
It is extra-ordinarily important to note that one of the main causes of death for people suffering from paralysis is the infection of the wounds or sores and thrombosis (blood clotting in the blood vessels). This device could immensely improve his health and ensure his future well-being. He longs to return to a relatively normal life, to continue his studies, meet his friends, while now he spends all the time in his room in order to avoid new sores and other complications. The ReWalk Personal 6.0 System costs £70,200 plus addition training travel and rehabilitation costs and cannot be acquired for free. If we collect more money than we have anticipated, that money will be donated for other persons in need.
I would be unspeakably grateful for any way that you could contribute in this dire situation. His position only worsens as time passes and a device such as this could improve his health exponentially and possibly even save his life in the future.
