“Once Upon a Time …..” These four words begin the story and move us into the magical world of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Newtown High School’s Drama is thrilled to have you step into this enchanted world as they transform their stage for this year’s musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. This timeless classic tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a selfish and unkind young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end. But time is running out. The Beast must learn his lesson soon or he and his household will be doomed forever. This “tale as old as time” is filled with spectacular costumes and sets. In addition to the amazing cast and crew, NHS’s wonderfully talented orchestra will provide the score which is a treat in itself. It is family theatre at its best and will bring the entire community together as we share in a story of love and acceptance teaching us that beauty is found within.
This show brings its own challenges when it comes to costs. We are renting costumes to the tune of $10,000 as it would be nearly impossible (and even more expensive) to make them. The rights, the flight rigging, the lighting, the sound, the lumber, and so forth each bring with it a very costly price tag and being a self-sufficient organization, we are looking to you, our community for some help. The average cost of a musical production at the high school is roughly $40,000, not including the stipends for the instructors or the cost of using the space at the high school and with the added intricacies of this show, we may exceed that number. If you able to sponsor us, or donate in any way, we would be sure to mention you in our playbill and it would not go unnoticed.
