Melody's Road to Judo Excellence
Don protégé
What is Judo?
Judo, a recognized Olympic Sport, means "the gentle way". It involves throwing, grappling, groundwork, chokes and armlocks.
Melody's Bio & Credentials:
Melody has been a dedicated, strong and passionate judoka (judo student) from the age of 7. Tiny as she was, going against competitors (up to double her weight), never fazed her. In her earliest competitions, she would bow onto the mat, face her opponent, fight as hard as she could...and win or lose...end with a big grin. This same joy of competition and tenacity is what drives her forward.
Now, as a young lady, Melody has a love for judo that is still strong and growing. She has developed her physical strength even more through attending practice at her local club twice a week, attending provincial team practices once a month, and through doing farm chores every day. Having intense focus and a purposeful mindset on the mat, she has become a fast learner in all things judo, making her a formidible opponent.
Melody has been privileged to attend the Judo Camp at the International Peace Gardens and train under top coaches, compete in local tournaments, and national and international events, including the Regina Open 2016, Edmonton International 2016, and ending the season at the Canadian Open Judo Championships in Calgary (otherwise known as the "Nationals") in the spring. At the Nationals, she placed 9th in Canada in her category. She has many bronze, silver and gold medals to commemorate her hard work along the way. Her latest medal was a gold in her category at the Inner City tournament in Winnipeg.
In the past, Melody had also been selected to represent Manitoba as part of the Provincial Team at the Western Canada Summer Games at Fort McMurray (2015). She also was privileged to attend a week long selective invitational National Training Camp at the National Training Center in Montreal (2016). While there, she trained under a National coach, trained with a current Paralympian, & learned what being part of the National Judo Team would require. She is very grateful to have attended. It is clear that Melody is putting what she learned into practice on the mat as she has impressed many with her speed, strength and technique at recent tournaments of the 2016/17 season.
Media Coverage:
Melody has been featured many times in the Rivers Banner and in the Brandon Sun, as well as many other rural newspapers as they trace her exciting journey to her ultimate goal...the Olympics.
The Purpose of This Fundraiser:
