Save Lonaconing Silk Mill

$2,586 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 54 people in 32 months
For roughly 35 years, Herb Crawford has been the owner of the Lonconing Silk Mill in Western Maryland. It is the last intact silk mill in the United States. The mill has been subject to vandalism over the years, and the roof is in dire need of replacement. It is a unique part of American history that should be saved.

As Herb is aging and in need of funds, his wife, Betty, has developed Alzheimer’s and needs constant supervision. Herb is unable to tend the mill as he would like. Please help and make a donation so this vital building can be restored.

Fantastic News!
Recently, supporters of the Silk Mill reached out to a non-profit organization called Adventures in Preservation and they responded!

AiP is an exciting young organization that envisions a world where people use, understand, and appreciate historic buildings that are vital to economic and environmental sustainability.
The AiP team will be visiting the mill in a couple of weeks to assess the roof damage. The hope is to patch for the winter and bring in volunteers to fix the entire roof in the spring. We will keep you updated!
With all this excitement don’t forget we still need your continued support with materials. If you know someone who can sponsor the project let us know. If you know a roofing expert who might consider in-kind donations let us know.
There will be a t-shirt fundraiser soon, watch for it!

You can check out their website at http://adventuresinpreservation.org/

Mary McAlpine Pinder Local, State and Federal Funding have been looked into to no avail. Mr. Crawford has tried many different avenues trying to raise funds. I wish him luck with this GoFundMe site. It is shame that the Local State and Federal agencies have not gotten involved in saving this piece of history.

As the last Silk Mill in the U S, I would think that there is some kind of federal funding that could preserve this site. Maybe this should be looked into before trying to doing a go find me.

I visited and photographed this historic site several times a number of years ago, enjoyed my visit with Herb. Of all the places I've photographed, this one needs to be preserved as a museum.
