UPDATE (8/5/17):  We have removed the ticket options from the page, but if you still wish to participate in today's charter, we have 20 seats available.  Please bring cash or check donation of $105 per person directly to the event if you wish to participate!  Please arrive between 1PM and 1:45PM.

The Locust Heights & Western Railroad, of Clarksburg, West Virginia, is known to many for its custom built "Mason Climax" steam locomotive. The railroad offers free rides to guests each Wednesday night during the summer of each year. Unfortunately, the line has sustained a debt of nearly $5000 due to required repairs of the locomotive's boiler. Also needed are funds for general repairs and maintenance of the railroad.

This GOFUNDME is not just to collect funds, but to offer donors the opportunity to participate in a special RAILFAN PHOTO CHARTER on the railroad to be held Saturday, August 5th. The day will include several "photo runbys", with photographers given the chance to stand alongside of the railroad at several locations to get pictures of the Climax and her train running past for photographs. In addition to the train itself, the event will also incorporate period actors and some unique props to give photographers an experience unlike any other in the recent history of the Locust Heights and Western Railroad. Night photography opportunities (including professional studio lighting by world renowned photographer Walter Scriptunas II) and a dinner pizza party will also be included. Individuals who desire to be a part of this special day can join us for a MINIMUM DONATION OF $105 USD. You MUST select the "PHOTO CHARTER" in the "Rewards" section to participate. We also have discount packages available for groups of two or four. Only 40 tickets will be offered. For more information and more specific event schedule, please contact casshews@live.com . If for some reason you are unable to donate directly to the page but wish to participate, please email us for assistance.

Please include your full mailing address and email address when you make your donation.  We will also need to know the names of each member of your party as we will be producing customized souvenir tickets/name tags that will be issued to each guest on the day of the trip!  A tentative event schedule is available upon request.  A more finalized schedule will be issued to all participants via email a few weeks prior to the event.  We would like to have a minimum of 10 donors for this event.

Below is our TENTATIVE schedule for the event.  Note that the trips will take place during the afternoon and evening hours due to optimal lighting along the route during that time.  There will be approximately 20-30 minutes between each run to allow train cars to be switched in the yard, and to allow guests an opportunity to use the restroom.

1:00PM-2:00PM Registration/Guest briefing
2:00PM-3:30PM 1st trip featuring several runbys
4:00PM-5:30PM 2nd trip featuring runbys/actors
5:30PM-6:30PM Dinner Pizza Party
6:30PM-8:00PM 3rd trip featuring runbys/actors
8:45PM-10:30PM Multiple night photos, including yard scene and trestle scene featuring night train ride.

CAB RIDES (NEW 6/15):  For an additional donation of $25, you will receive the opportunity to ride in the locomotive cab for one trip during our planned three trip day. Only TWO guests will be permitted this opportunity during each trip, for a total of SIX AVAILABLE TICKETS.  To receive a cab ride, please select the "CHARTER + CAB" reward option when making your donation.  See the "Disclaimers" section below for rules specific to those holding a cab ride ticket.

SOUVENIRS (NEW 7/24):  Every ticket holder will receive a complimentary copy of our ALL NEW limited edition booklet, "The Locust Heights & Western Railroad:  A Photographic History" as well as a commemorative brass tag.  Also, those who are NOT able to attend may also receive these souvenirs for a minimum $25.00 donation.  (Everyone who has previously donated $25.00 or more will automatically receive these items.)

NOTE:  If you would like to make a donation but are not able to attend, it would be welcome and appreciated.  Please leave a note though to let us know!

**DISCLAIMERS: DUE TO THE PRIMITIVE NATURE OF THIS RAILROAD OPERATION, THE LOCUST HEIGHTS AND WESTERN RAILROAD, THE EVENT HOSTS, AND THE GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN MANAGERS WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURY SUSTAINED ON THE RAILROAD PROPERTY BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER THE EVENT. HOWEVER, IF AN EMERGENCY SHOULD ARISE, WE WILL ATTEMPT TO ASSIST YOU IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE. THE RAILROAD IS NOT HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE AND WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS EVENT FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING OR STANDING FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME, OR FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE FAINT OF HEART. YOU ARE PARTICIPATING AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOUR DONATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE A SEAT ON THE TRAIN, BUT DOES GUARANTEE A SPOT AT THE PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATIONS. WITH THAT SAID, EACH GUEST WILL GET TO RIDE THE TRAIN FOR AT LEAST ONE RUN DURING THE SCHEDULED DAY. SOME WALKING MAY BE REQUIRED BETWEEN LOCATIONS AS THE TRAIN MAY NOT BE LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE EVERY INDIVIDUAL ON EVERY TRIP. AS THIS IS A DONATION, NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  WE PLAN TO RUN THE TRAIN RAIN OR SHINE, ALTHOUGH THE PLANNED SCHEDULE MAY BE ALTERED IF DEEMED NECESSARY BY OUR VOLUNTEER STAFF.

CAB RIDE RULES:

~We reiterate our above safety disclaimer.  The cab can be a hot and dangerous place if you are not careful, so please use discretion when riding in the locomotive.

~The first donor to order a cab ride will get first choice of the trip they want to ride, and we will follow order from there.  Your opportunity to decide will be made available to you at a later date once we have a better idea of what will be happening on each run.

~Each donor may only purchase ONE cab ride during the scheduled day.

~Your cab ride ticket does NOT include cab rides during photo runbys.  Your time in the cab will be during the trip to and from each photo location only, and at times when the entire group is riding the train.  You will be asked to exit the cab at any time that a photo runby or static photo is going to take place.

~We plan to make sure that each trip is a full ride over the entire line even when chosen photo locations are near the beginning of the line.  HOWEVER, in the event that there is a need to go back to the station boarding area without completing the full run, your cab ride WILL conclude with said return to the station unless otherwise noted on the day of the charter.  If one group's trip is shorter than the rest, we MAY allow time to be made up during the night photo run, but this will be at the discretion of the railroad's owners.

I would like to thank the volunteers and owners of the Locust Heights & Western Railroad and all of the donors and guests who contributed to making yesterday's event the success that it was. It felt great to be able to work with a railroad that wanted our help and appreciated our efforts, and to have guests who really cared and wanted to be there. We will be sending a survey out to our attending guests. We hope that you will take a moment this week to complete the survey, telling us the aspects of the event you most enjoyed, and also telling us what we could improve or do different in the future. There has already been some discussion that we may offer a similar trip someday! Please post your photos and videos and get the word out that even though the line is short, it has a lot of character and aesthetic potential for even more photo opportunities! (Matt Wilson)

*The big day is tomorrow! Just a reminder, guests are welcome to start showing up for the photo charter around 1:00PM, and the first train is planned for 2:00PM. At this time, it looks like the weather is going to be in our favor, so need for rain gear is unlikely. Please bring a folding chair for breaks and dinner if you have one. For those who are unfamiliar with the area, the railroad's address is 115 Locust Heights Drive, Clarksburg, WV 26301. If you are coming from North, East, or West, the best route is to drive through downtown Clarksburg utilizing the Chestnut St. exit from Route 50. If coming from the South, the best route will be the Stonewood/Nutter Fort exit from I-79.

*We will be removing the ticketing options later tonight, but if anyone decides last minute that they'd like to join us, you are welcome to bring cash or check directly to the event tomorrow...we still have room for up to 20 more!

*We will leave the option open to donate to the fund until Sunday night for those who may still wish to receive a copy of our new history booklet and commemorative brass tag via mail for a $25 minimum donation. Unsold booklets and tags will be made available to guests of the railroad's regular Wednesday evening trips.

*CAB RIDERS: You will be receiving a private email shortly!

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! :)

AN UPDATE FOR OUR PRESENT (AND POTENTIAL) DONORS: As we move into the final week prior to our LH&W Photo Charter, we would like to thank EVERYONE who has contributed to the boiler repair fund through our GoFundMe Charter page. Even if you are not able to attend, we still appreciate all that has been done by our donors. The locomotive is now back under steam, and operated its first official trips of 2017 on Wednesday, July 26th.

Regarding specifics of the event, we calculate, at this time, that we will be expecting approximately 15-20 guests to attend the trip! With this smaller group, we believe that it will actually make things a little more fun and allow the attending guests the opportunity to give us some limited input in how we utilize our actors/props, and to make the event a little more “custom-fitted” than would have been possible with a larger crowd.

One of the biggest questions that we presume is on everyone’s mind is the fact that the railroad is under one mile in length…so just how many locations could we possibly make use of? Our pre-planning visit to the railroad earlier this month involved walking the entire line during one of the regular Wednesday trips. We discovered that there are potentially 7-9 different runby locations that can be used in a variety of ways, with multiple camera angles possible at each site. The general plan is going to be to use 3-4 different locations/vantage points on each of the first two planned trips, with the Climax and her train facing its normal “west bound” orientation.

One of the two trips will likely feature only the Climax pulling a simulated log train featuring both of the line’s flat cars and caboose. The other trip will likely feature the Climax pulling just the two flat cars, with the Vulcan gasoline locomotive pulling the railroad’s ballast car and caboose. After dinner, our third and last daylight run will again feature the Climax, but on the “east bound” end of the train featuring the two flat cars. At dark, we plan to set up MULTIPLE night photo opportunities…one will feature both locomotives and the rolling stock in the railroad yard, and the other will feature the Climax, flat cars, and caboose on the railroad’s trestle. Throughout the day and night runs, we will offer most scenes both with actors and without. Also, as time allows, we may have a few scenes with actors/props in or near the railroad’s sawmill building and surrounding structures. We anticipate that the first train will depart at approximately 2PM, and the night train will conclude by approximately 11PM (the night photo may be shortened in the event of severe weather). Guests may begin arriving as early as 1PM, to allow time to socialize and receive your boarding pass and complimentary souvenirs.

Water will be available in the boarding area throughout the day, with soft drinks available at dinner. Dinner will include Pizza, Salad, and Dessert. Also, we do not have quite enough chairs for everyone to sit in during breaks/dinner. If you have a lawn chair, please bring it! Dinner will be served under roof in the event of rain. (On that note, please plan ahead and bring anything that you may need throughout the day in the event of rain. We will be outside without shelter for most of the day.)

This will likely be our last full update prior to the event. If any participants have questions or need any more specific information, please email us. Also, we would like to ask that any donors who do NOT plan to attend please let us know. Emails can be sent to casshews@live.com.

We look forward to a great day on the LH&W on Saturday, August 5th!
