 KIRKLAND, WA
The Kirkland Woman's Club is the Kirkland, Washington, chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which is an international organization “dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.”  The Kirkland chapter is small with about 20 members working to serve our community through charitable and other service projects.  For example, we provide 36 layette gift baskets each year for new mothers who cannot afford all the things their newborns need.  We also provide four scholarships each year for senior girls who are graduating from either of the two community high schools  and who will enroll in a school of higher learning.

Our chapter clubhouse was built in 1925.  It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is a Kirkland Landmark Building.  It serves as a venue for weddings, parties and other gatherings throughout the year.  Although it is very charming and beautiful, we recently learned that it needs substantial repair, restoration and rehabilitation to preserve it and bring it up to code.

The roof, for example, does not adequately handle water drainage and water runoff, so water is damaging the stucco exterior.  The concrete front porch has a wood framework beneath it that is rotting and needs to be replaced.  There are two fireplaces with chimneys that are separating from the exterior of the building and will eventually fall if we do not secure them.  Further, there is a bearing wall that is  inadequate for the weight it is now holding.  We must reinforce it now or face more serious repairs later.

These are only a few examples in a total project will cost an estimated $200,000.  We have some savings but not nearly enough to handle this magnitude of repair and rehabilitation.  If you appreciate historic buildings, and you want to see this one preserved, can you help us?  There is no amount that is too modest.   We would greatly appreciate any help to preserve this beautiful Kirkland Landmark.

This building is such a gorgeous landmark in Kirkland. These restorations will improve the safety, elegance and neighborhood appeal. Also, it is such a fun organization for women that offers a great deal of community service.
