Emergency Aid for Sri Lanka

What happened?

Easter Sunday is a celebratory occasion for Christians, Catholics, and their neighboring allies around the world, but in Sri Lanka devastation was wrought. The Pearl of the Indian Ocean suffered the deadliest act of violence since the end of the 26 year-long civil war in 2009.

The wave of bombings began around 8:45 a.m on April 21st, 2019 and targeted

Roman Catholic houses of worship:

St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, the capital;

St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo;

and Zion Church in Batticaloa

and popular hotels:

the Shangri-La,

the Cinnamon Grand,

and the Kingsbury, all in Colombo.

What's happening now?

The death toll is currently (April 21st) at 290 people with more than 450 people injured.

Swarms of people gather at hospitals to donate blood and the people on the ground are united rising above this atrocity.

What can you do?

They need more help. Hospitals need funds, victims and their families need financial assistance, and infrastructure intrinsic to the safety of communities needs to be rebuilt.

Let's aim to raise [a minimum of] $1000 which is 174355,00 Sri Lankan Rupees.

This is a modest estimate and a minimum, all your contributions above $1000 are appreciated and definitely useful!

Don't let this be another collective action problem.
Don't let ~someone else~ do it in your place.
Be the change.
$1 is 174.35 Sri Lankan rupees, if that is all you can give, please do.

$5 is GoFundMe's minimum, any less can be Venmo-ed to @Ashanee-Kottage

My name is Ashanee Kottage and I'm currently a freshman at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. I was born and raised in Sri Lanka my whole life and I am so glad to have a home away from home in the States. I appreciate all the kind words and prayers all my friends from around the world have offered me, and donating would tangibly help the broader Sri Lankan community. I am personally in contact with non-profit and community service organizations in Sri Lanka and will continue to maintain communication to ensure that 100% of funds (accounting for GoFundMe processing fees) are dispersed to victims and their families.

I am looking for team members to help me with this endeavor
