Original Description:
On Monday June 6th Blackrock National Hurling Club member Damien Coleman will be attempting to break a Guinness World Record by running the entire Cork City Marathon while soloing a sliotar on his hurley in the fastest time.
This unique world record attempt will attempt to raise money on two fronts: 50% of the money raised will go towards a new hurling wall development for the young hurlers at the club and the other 50% will go towards Cork Simon Community who do fantastic work in helping those affected by the current homelessness crisis.
Damien was in the Mater Private Hospital Cork to officially launch his world record attempt, along with Una Plant Murphy, who is a renowned distance runner from Kinsale. Una is a senior cardiac nurse in the Mater Private Hospital Cork who has recently completed the Boston Marathon and is looking to be competitive in the Cork City Marathon. Mater Private Hospital Cork are proud sponsors of The Rockies and have recently opened up a brand new state-of-the-art Emergency Department at their hospital in Citygate, Mahon, dealing with medical and surgical emergencies, respiratory and cardiac complaints, and sports injuries for anyone over the age of 16.
Damien is a former underage player with the club turned avid runner and has been running the roads of Cork with his hurley and sliotar over the last few weeks in preparation for his attempt. It will be an incredible feat of endurance and he will be doing his club and community proud regardless of the outcome.
