At our 20 week ultrasound, we were unable to get all the necessary pictures of the Baby. Several ultrasounds later, our Doctor called to inform us our Baby’s right ventricle was smaller than the left ventricle. With this, we were referred to Sanford Children’s in Fargo to see a Pediatric Cardiologist. We met with Dr. Horner on June 19 for a Fetal Echo Cardiogram. Dr. Horner informed us of our baby's heart condition - Pulmonary Atresia. A diagnosis of Pulmonary Atresia means the valve that lets blood out of the heart to go to the lungs (pulmonary valve) did not form correctly. Dr. Horner referred us to Mayo Clinic.

We arrived at Mayo on June 27 to meet with a variety of doctors. First on the agenda was another Fetal Echo Cardiogram. The Pediatric Cardiologist was able to show us through the Echo Cardiogram exactly what the area of concern is for our Baby. He was able to give us a few more answers in regards to how common, and what the success rate is, etc.

On June 28, we had another ultrasound. We met with Dr. Davies, OBGYN. His plan was to have Emilee move to Rochester on July 9. Dr. Davies set an induction date of July 30. Then we met with Dr. Asay, whose medical team will be the Baby's primary care doctor. He explained more to us about what will happen after Baby is delivered.

On July 3, we met Dr. Said who will be performing the surgery. Baby will have a series of three surgeries. The first surgery will be within the first few days after birth with the next one at 4 – 6 months old. And the last one will be around age 3.

The induction day arrived! On July 30, Henry was born at 9:10 pm, weighing 8 lbs 5 ozs and 22¼” long. Our delivery/neonatal medical team consisted of 14 people. Once Henry arrived, the neonatal team started their procedure. Emilee was able to spend a few minutes with Henry before he was transported to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. Emilee remained at the Methodist Hospital for recovery, while Kyle went with Henry.

On August 3, at just four days old, Henry had his first Open Heart Surgery. With this surgery, Henry received a saphenous BT shunt. This shunt creates a bypass from the main blood vessel leading out of the heart (aorta) to the pulmonary arteries which allows for adequate blood flow to the lungs.

Henry will have two more Open Heart Surgeries. The next surgery is a Glenn Procedure when Henry is 4 – 6 months old. The surgery after that is a Fontan Procedure will be when Henry is 2 – 3 years old.
