HEAL International is a nonprofit 501(c)3 founded in 2008 by a group of refugees from Africa and the Middle East in Buffalo, NY. Over the last few years, Buffalo has become the top resettlement location for newcomer refugees in New York State, receiving more than 1/3rd of refugees arriving in the Empire State. We work with refugees on Buffalo's West Side, providing assistance with interpretation, healthcare access, and eduction. We are looking to expand the scope and capacity of our services, because our resettled neighbors are building new lives! We hope to raise money to complete Phase I of a building project that would allow us to expand.
THE PROJECT:
In 2008, HEAL purchased a vacant building on Buffalo's West Side to be used as an Economic Empowerment Center for our local refugee population. Due to a number of unforeseen issues, the project was delayed. However, we have spent the last eight months cleaning up the building and working on the initial demolition.
In order to complete Phase I of our project, we need to raise $25,000. This includes $16,000 for demolition of an unstable portion of the building and $9,000 for interior updates to heating, electrical, and plumbing systems. We have set our goal at $30,00, with all additional funds spent on supplies and materials to assist with our rebuild. We are hoping to secure these funds by the end of the year to make way for our new offices and new clients!
When Phase I is complete, we'll look to Phase II of the project, working with community partners to establish our community space, offices, and clinic on Buffalo's West Side.
We believe in building our growing community and our work has made real change in Buffalo. The building will not only provide space for HEALm but also community partners like Burmese Community Support Center, Inc. Together, we work to educate our respective communities and open dialogues regarding key issues facing our neighborhoods, communities, and region. Your contribution will allow us to expand our youth programming, helping refugee youth with the transition to American life and schools.
