¿Qué es Flor del Batey?

Flor del Batey es el sueño de mi hermana Belkis, mi sobrina Nicauris y mi cuñada Ana María: su futuro taller de joyas artesanales elaboradas únicamente con productos naturales.

 
¿Un batey? ¿Qué es eso?

Las tres nacieron y viven en el batey Alejandro Bass, enclavado en el municipio Consuelo de la región Este de la República Dominicana. Los bateyes son comunidades rurales construidas a principios del siglo XX por los ingenios azucareros para albergar a los trabajadores durante la temporada de corte y recogida de la caña. Con el tiempo, los bateyes se convirtieron en punto de encuentro entre haitianos y dominicanos, formando una cultura mestiza muy característica y singular. La privatización de los ingenios a finales en 1994 supuso un duro golpe para los habitantes de los bateyes, que vieron como de la noche a la mañana se desvanecieron miles de puestos de trabajo. En la actualidad, la práctica totalidad de los bateyanos viven bajo el nivel de la pobreza, con acceso limitado a la asistencia sanitaria y una tasa de desempleo que en el mejor de los casos cuadriplica el de las zonas urbanas de la República Dominicana.


¿Por qué nace Flor del Batey?

Ante esta situación de empobrecimiento y falta de oportunidades laborales, hemos decidido pasar a la acción. Hace tres años Belkis, Nicauris y Ana María hicieron un curso para formarse como joyeras artesanales. Disfrutaron mucho el curso, ya que además de divertirse creando, se dieron cuenta que se les daba muy bien. Desde que finalizaron esta formación, han surgido varias oportunidades de presentar sus creaciones en público, con una gran acogida por parte del público. De forma que un día nos preguntamos… ¿y si nos convertimos en empresarias?

¿Y cómo lo haremos?

La filosofía de Flor del Batey es clara y simple: creemos en la belleza natural de la mujer, una mujer que se siente orgullosa de sus raíces. Como dice la canción, somos hijas del cañaveral, y a él le debemos toda nuestra inspiración y nuestras materias primas. Creamos usando materiales naturales que encontramos a nuestro alrededor. Ante todo, somos madres pero también somos hijas, y como tales respetamos a la madre de todos, la naturaleza.

Queremos romper barreras y defender nuestra cultura mestiza: una colorida y alegre mezcla de indio taíno, raíces africanas y herencia española.
 

  ¿Cómo puedes ayudarnos?

Tú eres el protagonista de este proyecto. Puedes apoyarnos de la manera siguiente:

1. Elige tu joya de nuestro muestrario de debajo. Si necesitas más información, iremos publicando fichas de cada joya en nuestros perfiles de Facebook e Instagram.


2. Una vez te hayas decidido, haz la donación correspondiente al precio marcado y publica un comentario con el nombre de la joya.

¿A qué destinaremos el dinero recaudado?

Para poder poner en marcha nuestro proyecto, necesitamos lo siguiente:
 
Materiales y maquinaria = 1.456 €.
Este sería nuestro primer paso, que llevaríamos a cabo al mismo tiempo que el apartado siguiente. Aquí hemos incluído lo indispensable para crear nuestra primera colección: 4 motores, 1 prensa, 1 sierra, 1 caladora, 2 mesas de trabajo y materiales para las muestras. Con estas máquinas y materiales, tendremos muchas más posibilidades de trabajar nuevos materiales y formas para nuestra futura colección.
 
Trámites para crear la empresa, incluyendo costes de registro, traslados a San Pedro y a Santo Domingo = 340 €.
Queremos iniciar estos trámites lo antes posible para establecernos como empresa y poder desarrollar nuestra actividad dentro de los cauces legales.
 
Reforma del taller y equipamiento de oficina = 3.286 €.
El gasto principal de este apartado será la reforma un local del que disponemos, que se encuentra en pésimas condiciones, para transformarlo en nuestro taller y oficina. También incluimos la compra de un ordenador, una impresora, materiales para embalar las joyas y material de oficina.
 
Diseño de web y marketing = 2.430 €.
En este apartado hemos apuntado los gastos de registro internacional de nuestra marca, el diseño de nuestra web, el coste del dominio y de la tienda online.

Una vez se termine la campaña, iremos informando del progreso del proyecto en nuestra web y perfiles de redes sociales.

What is Flor del Batey?

Flor del Batey is the dream of my sister Belkis, my niece Nicauris and my sister-in-law Ana María: her future workshop of handmade jewelry made only with natural products.
 

A batey? What's that?

All three were born and live in the batey Alejandro Bass, located in the Consuelo municipality of the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic. Bateyes are rural communities built at the beginning of the 20th century by sugar mills to house workers during the sugar cane harvesting season. Over time, bateyes became a meeting point between Haitians and Dominicans, forming a very characteristic and unique mestizo culture. The privatization of the mills at the end of 1994 was a blow to the inhabitants of the bateyes, who saw thousands of jobs vanish overnight. At present, practically all batey inhabitants live below the poverty line, with limited access to health care and an unemployment rate that, in the best of cases, quadruples that of the urban areas of the Dominican Republic.
 

How did Flor del Batey come about?
 
Faced with this situation of impoverishment and lack of job opportunities, we decided to take action. Three years ago Belkis, Nicauris and Raquel took a course to train as artisan jewelers. They enjoyed it very much. In addition to having fun creating they realized that they were very good at it. Since the end of this training, several opportunities have arisen to present their creations in public, and the reception has been great! So one day we asked ourselves... "What if we became entrepreneurs?"

How will we do it?
 
The philosophy of Flor del Batey is clear and simple: we believe in the natural beauty of women. Women that are proud of their roots. As the song says, "somos hijas del cañaveral" , we are daughters of the cane field, and to it we owe all our inspiration and our raw materials. We create using natural materials that we find around us. Above all we are mothers but we are also daughters, and as such we respect the mother of everyone: nature.
 
We want to break down barriers and defend our "mestizo" culture: a colorful and cheerful mix of Taino Indian, African roots and Spanish heritage. But above all, we proclaim the natural beauty of black women: their joy and their color.
 

How can you help us?

In this project you are the protagonist. This is how you can support us:

1. Choose your jewel from our sample card below. If you need more information, we will be posting data sheets for each of the jewels on our Facebook and Instagram profiles.


2. Once you've made your choice, make the donation corresponding to the marked price and write a comment with the name of the jewel.

How will we use the money we raise?

To get our project under way, we need the following:
 
Purchase of materials and machinery =  €1,456 .
This would be our first step. Here we have included the essentials to create our first collection: 4 engines, 1 press, 1 saw, 1 jig saw, 2 work benches and materials for the samples. Having all this will allow us to work new materials and create new concepts for our future collection.
 
Company formation costs (including registration costs and transport to San Pedro and the capital) = €340.
We want to deal with the paperwork as soon as possible so that we can establish ourselves as a company and operate legally.

Workshop renovation and purchase of office equipment = €3,286.
The main expenditure here would be renovating our work space, which is in a terrible condition, to transform it into our workshop and office. We also include the purchase of a computer, a printer, jewelry packaging materials and office supplies.

Website design and marketing = €2,430.
Here we include the costs of trademark registration, website design, domain name registration and creation of an online store.

Once this campaign is over, we will post regular progress updates for the project on our website and social media.
