Dulcelina and Johary are sisters whose family of six has experienced financial hardship and health issues related to a mold infestation. Their home became uninhabitable and the family was forced to evacuate and leave all of their belongings behind.
Dulcelina is a single mother of a 1-year old boy, her sister Johary And husband, Sixto Sr. are parents to two boys, ages 9 and 1.
Last year, Ducelina and Johary’s families moved into a 2-bedroom apartment to help raise their children together. When heavy rains poured down on northern California in 2016, the family’s apartment became infested with mold and the problem slowly grew to unsafe living conditions – the walls turned black and all of their personal belongings became damp.
Eventually, the children and parents developed cold-like symptoms and Johary’s 9-year old developed a serious skin infection caused by the mold infestation.
The family voiced their concerns to the landlord, but they were cautious with their demands because they needed to keep their affordable housing. Eventually, the landlord investigated the apartment and was advised by professionals to evacuate the family immediately. The family has not been able to return to their previous apartment and is struggling to afford the higher rent in their new home.
Moreover, the family was told that all of their belongings were no longer safe to use. They lost all of their furniture, including beds, clothing and linens.
As they were already barely making ends meet, the added stress of leaving their home, losing their belongings, and experiencing physical illnesses have taken a toll on this family.
Your generous contributions will make every little bit of difference for this family in need. It will go towards lunch boxes, beds, silverware, sheets, blankets, towels, clothing, carseats, shoes for the kids, cups, and plates. This family has to start from scratch and has very little funds to do so. Thank you for taking the time to read Dulcelina and Johary's story. They are grateful for your time, thoughtfulness and generosity.
