It’s Yukon…why do we need snowmaking?
Winters are drier and warmer, resulting in less reliable snow throughout the winter. Snow shoveling prior to early season races has become the norm
We know it works! CCY rented Mt. Sima’s equipment in January 2016 to ensure adequate snow would be available for the Nationals in March
Man-made snow is more durable than natural snow
Recreational skiers will be able to ski safely on the trails accessed from Mt. Mac facility and the stadium. These areas will be the primary focus of snow-making, and will allow snow to be transported to other parts of the trail network as needed
Snowmaking will create opportunities for hosting future National training camps and races in Whitehorse
Snowmaking will provide:
ü Consistency in programming for Cross Country Yukon
ü Increase in programing for ski club as programming can start in November
ü Make trails safer for recreational skiers
ü Allow us to host early season races.
ü Lengthen our season
ü Help sustain the club through the hosting of major events
Snowmaking makes “cents”
All infrastructure at the Whitehorse Nordic Center, from the Mt Mac building, to the Pisten Bully, Tube and Bridge is the direct result from hosting major races from 1981 to present.
Hosting 2 Ski Nationals (hosting 1000 people) in the last 6 years, we have contributed over 2 million dollars to the local economy. Not only do these major events contribute to the economy of Whitehorse and Yukon, they ensure that the Club benefits from revenues that allow major purchases of grooming equipment.
