December 16, 2016, the Main Building/Warm-up Lodge at the Ice Alaska Ice Park was destroyed by fire. It is a great loss, especially following the very recent death of one of our remaining Founders. But we are grateful that everyone got out alive and uninjured! We greatly appreciate the outpouring of concern and good wishes from the Fairbanks Community, Local and International Ice Artists, as well as our volunteers and friends from out-of-State.
As is often the case after a devestating fire, we have found shortcomings between what we lost and what can be replaced with insurance and what's left in the current budget.
This fund is specfically to help suppliment the cost of producing the 2017 World Ice Art Championships.
Inside the building that was lost, was stored all the webcams, routers, and equipment used to produce the live feeds during the competitions. As well as tools for the sculptors, shovels, sleds, and a host of compters, printers, used by sculptors, and support volunteers.
Also covered each year with our annual event budget is food for volunteers and artists, lodging, and equipement rental.
Before the fire, the Ice Park was set to open February 20th with the Kids Park, followed by the first of four competitions to begin February 27th. These plans have not changed. We have made commitments, and we will host our event!
This coming year is special because, 2017 BP World Ice Art Championships is qualifyer for the 2018 Winter Olypmics Arts Festival.
We thank our friends who are offering to donate their time and tools to help us rebuild. Many are also asking if they can assist us financially, and for that we have set up this GoFundMe accoount.
Ice Alaska and the BP World Ice Art Championships have become a globally recognized event that brings many visitors to Fairbanks Alaska at the end of each winter. Despite the events of these past few weeks, we thank everyone for their continued support.
