Women & Peace: In the Footsteps of Bertha von Suttner
“Because peace has no future without women and men working equally together.”
The world stands on the edge. Wars multiply, democracies weaken, and fear grows louder than hope. However, admits this chaos, women continue to resist, rebuild, and lead. They negotiate, they heal, they keep communities alive. They know what is needed. And yet, their work remains sometimes invisible.
On December 10, at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the global symbol of Peace and Justice, we will gather to stimulate more room for female voices along with men in the field of Peace and Justice. The Conference “Women & Peace: In the Footsteps of Bertha von Suttner – What Legacy, What Prospects?” will bring together activists, diplomats, and peacebuilders from around the world to amplify the voices of women shaping peace, from war zones to world capitals.
The central idea is to move beyond gender stereotypes that portray women either as passive victims of war or as naturally predisposed to peace. Let’s make space for a new narrative: one that recognises women and men equally as agents of change, builders of peace, and voices of resilience.
This isn’t just an event, it’s a movement to reclaim peace as a human, equal, and urgent mission. Because, as Bertha Von Suttner, the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, once stated: “Peace is the task of men and women with equal rights.”
